[Birthdays are important things, even birthdays that have to be celebrated in the worst town ever. Fern takes these things very seriously, so while he's still unsure about his own he's still intent on making sure Varian's goes well. Or at least not terrible. He's pretty sure he can manage not terrible.
He can't really organize a big party or anything, but there are other things he can do. That's why he's knocking on the door of Varian's house on the morning of the 18th, careful to try and avoid setting off any booby traps. [It's soon after the incident with Jon at the library, and Glitch in the alley. Fern fled, found somewhere quiet at the edge of town, and hid himself up in one of the trees. His head is still a complete mess, but he's managed to calm down enough to put the sword away, and pull out his Fluid from his bag. He doesn't notice that one of his hands has neon pink blood on it.
He has no idea what else to do. He's scared and alone and he doesn't want to be either.]

He has Orpheus and his music to thank for that, oddly enough; a complete and total stranger with one very heartwarming song. Who knew that's all it would take? Fern certainly hadn't, and after he's found himself back to normal and helped Orpheus get home safely he's left on his own, with nothing but his mind and the memories of the past few weeks.
He remembers the things he did, the things he said to people. All of the trials, the robotic bears, the executions. Oh, he remembers the executions.
After he's taken Orpheus home he stumbles his way back to the lake, needing to be away from people in order to process everything. He finds a tree that's managed to hold out against all the herbicide, hiding up in its canopy and pulling out his Fluid. With shaking hands, he sends a simple text.]

[Varian comes back to life, eyes clear of despair and feeling like he'd fallen off a goddamn cliff. He lays in bed for a while, Ruddiger curled around him, chattering anxiously. Something happened, something bad - he knows that much. Once the rooms stops spinning and Varian slips in and out of consciousness a little more, memories start to trickle back in. The trickle becomes a torrent, the torrent becomes a flood.
He sits shakily up, he did so much wrong. Worse than he even did back home, he realises. Fern had been right, this town had finally grabbed him with both hands and turned him into someone he didn't want to be any more. He'd attacked innocent people, he'd tried to kill them. Worse, he'd attacked the people who mattered the most to him- struck them where he knew it would hurt the most.
The desire to stay at home and do nothing, to just...waste away and hope no one ever seeks him out crosses his mind, but he knows that's foolish. He can't just sit here. He needs to do something to try and make it right. Even if he's starting back from square one again, he can't let himself fester in his defeat for a year again. So, he drags himself out of bed, getting dressed into the nearest clean and not-covered-in-pink-blood-from-being-crushed-to-death clothes he can find. He goes to reach for Rhodium Raps, because at least that can steady him but...oh. Right. That's gone. He sits shakily up, he did so much wrong. Worse than he even did back home, he realises. Fern had been right, this town had finally grabbed him with both hands and turned him into someone he didn't want to be any more. He'd attacked innocent people, he'd tried to kill them. Worse, he'd attacked the people who mattered the most to him- struck them where he knew it would hurt the most.
The desire to stay at home and do nothing, to just...waste away and hope no one ever seeks him out crosses his mind, but he knows that's foolish. He can't just sit here. He needs to do something to try and make it right. Even if he's starting back from square one again, he can't let himself fester in his defeat for a year again. So, he drags himself out of bed, getting dressed into the nearest clean and not-covered-in-pink-blood-from-being-crushed-to-death clothes he can find. He goes to reach for Rhodium Raps, because at least that can steady him but...oh. Right. That's gone.
