Hi. You've reached the voice mail of Ruby Rose. I-I can't come to the phone right now but f-feel free to leave a message after the beep and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

[There's a long pause and some awkward breathing.]

B-beep.

Ruby, I can hear you breathing.

[That's a LONG-ASS sigh right there.]

[Ruby why are you like this. But then, why is he like this? If either of them could function properly they wouldn't be here right now. Still, he'll play along- light and airy, like he's just leaving her a regular message. ]

[He's not hanging up. He's just going to start humming. Take your time.]

[Look. She'll take the sigh. She knows she's being a pain but there is a lot of feelings she's trying to process right now and she doesn't know how to do it.

[She's generally content to keep digging holes for herself until she hears the tone in his voice.

Honestly hearing him talk sounded a lot like the feelings going through her head right about now. It grounded the more frantic thoughts and gave her something to focus on. It helped.]

[What does he want to do? That's the real question here. It would be kinder in the long-run to ignore this. To let it die before it can become something else. Something more. Because he's a goddamn disaster, and he's scared of hurting her. She deserves someone better than him. Someone that hasn't done the things he has.

But Varian selfishly doesn't want to do that. The thought of leaving this be hurts. He doesn't want this to be nothing. ]

[There's no pity in his tone- just a statement of fact. The sky is blue.]

[The only reason Ruby's eyes had not started to glaze over was because he had mentioned gummy bears. She does have to have to give her head a shake when her head when he starts to talk more on her level.]

I mean that sounds cool and all but I could be eating those gummy bears instead.

[It's... More than a little longer than what "See you in a few" normally would mean to Ruby. She had to deal with her sister barging into her room immediately after she disconnected the call. So she had to deal with a frantic flash of emotions all over again and calming down back down.

She apparently has a lot going on in her life at the moment.

She does eventually show up at Varian's door. A long object wrapped in black fabric was slung over her shoulder with her usual gear. She gives the door a few knocks. No breaking and entering today.]

[That's fine, time is relative to Varian anyway when he's experimenting. Gotta drug a whole shit-ton of gummy bears after all. You deal with Yang, good luck with that disaster.

Still, he opens to door with a lopsided smile- because it honestly is good to see her even if his emotions are still currently running circles around his head screaming a lot. It's fine. He can handle this, it's fine. He opens the door a little more for her to enter- the house is currently empty of Ruddiger. ]

Hey, come on in. [He sees whatever she's got there and oh is he curious, but he'll at least wait like... three minutes before asking questions about it.] New piece for Crescent Rose?

[Ruby had a lot of awkward thoughts and feelings running around in her mind too. But she's not sure she wants to go another round of talking about her feelings with Yang. She also had to get something out of the house before it became a thing too.

So when Varian opens the door, she returns his lopsided smile with a bright and cheery one of her own. She makes note of the lack of Ruddiger but he could be off doing raccoon things like raiding someone else's fridge for a change. She didn't let that bother her.]

Hey, thanks!

[She steps in at an angle so the bundle doesn't hit anything in the threshold.

She feels her cheeks heat up when he asks about the gear. Gosh. This suddenly meant a whole lot more than just being a birthday gift or a thank you for saving her life.]

Uh-Well-No. Nothing quite like that.

[She fumbles to pull unsling from her shoulder and pushes it his direction.]

W-Why don't you take a look at it and tell me what you think?

Or actually where are those gummy bears? Gummy bears would be good right now.

[She gives the bundle another shove his way. Please take it.

Turns out there's a staff wrapped up in all that cloth. One that doubles as a rifle with a bayonet on the end. Something old timey for the old timey boy.]

[That's definately what Ruddiger is doing. Yessir. He blinks as she thrusts the bundle in his direction. It's not exactly what he was expecting and the fact she's being awkward about it only makes his own awkwardness grow. They'll be stuck in an awkwardness feedback if they're not careful.

He takes it from her, feeling his own cheeks flush. Okay okay, keep it together. ]

Um... sure, okay.

[He nods the way to his basement, thankfully now repaired from their last fun adventure. He places the bundle carefully on his workbench, before picking up a paper bag, offering them over. They are, indeed, filled with (not drugged) gummy bears. The paper bag has 'control' written on it- scribbled out in favour of 'Ruby's'. There you go, officially your gummy bears. ]

As promised, one entire bag of gummy bears.

[He'll leave her to inhale the candy, opening up the package. He'd put the messaged she'd given to him on his birthday to the back of his mind. With everything that's happened recently, it slipped through the cracks of his memory. Ah, but he remembers it now, picking it up and checking it over with a genuinely impressed expression.]

Oh, wow. You- you finished it?

[She's just going to dump her face in her cloak as they make their way downstairs. Just to give her own cheeks a bit of time to cool off. It's very smooth and not obvious at all what she's trying to do.

She manages to push any embarrassment she might feel aside when the gummy bears are tossed her way. She gives a fist pump and quickly finds herself a place to sit in the lab. ...Does he have chairs down here? Maybe they need to get some chairs down here for when she's loitering. If not she's plopped herself on a bench or against the wall. Either way she's going to open the bag and start popping gummy bears into her mouth.

Her eyes shift over toward him as he starts to open up the bundle. Smiling brightly as he starts to look it over.]

Yeah! I-well-I had a bit of spare time over the last week and a bit. So I just kind of went full throttle on it.

What do you think?

[She was also very aware he was having a rough time. So she thought it would've made a good pick-me-up.]

[He totally has a few shitty stools dotting around. Not exactly the most comfortable places in the world, but Varian kind of sucks at that side of things. Make him buy an armchair for in here, Ruby, even if it's a beat-up old one. At least then he can pass out on it instead of a workbench. Save his poor, sad back.

He grins at the staff, turning it this way and that, examining it. It really is something special. And she made it for him. No one's ever made him something before- he's usually the one doing all the making. A good pick=me-up this certainly is. ]

It-it's amazing! The craftsmanship on it is incredible! I- I mean I knew you were great at this, I've seen Cresent Rose, but this is really something! The trigger mechanism, the weight, the size- everything is perfect!

[Okay he's started to realise he's babbling excitedly a lot and manages to reign it in. A little. He lets out an awkward laugh, looking at her with a grin, trying his best to ignore the blush creeping across his face wow, okay, thanks for the butterflies, stomach, that's helpful.]

I uh... I mean. I love it. Thanks. It's really cool.

[Now that he'll be meeting Yang. They're going to have access to the family vehicle. So they can definitely pick him some furniture down the road. She will do what she can to save his back.

She can't help grinning as he looks it over. Normally she always likes it when someone appreciates her handiwork, but it made her heart flutter a little that he liked it. Jeez. It had only been a couple hours since they figured this was a thing to try but it nice to just... not assume those emotions were out of place.]

Well I had to go all out. It let it be too heavy that was uncomfortable to walk around with. It also needed to durable enough to be useful in a fight. The containers at the top should be able to store just about anything you can cook up to put them.

[Wow. Okay. He's smiling at and blushing at her and looking at her like a dork. Uh- Oh no. She's pretty sure she's doing the same thing. Yep. Just going to look up toward the ceiling a little.]
