[It's distressing, that all of this is going to go the exact same way as things did with Cliff. He'd deserve it, of course, he attacked both other boys for no reason, but it still hurts to think about.

Varian is right. All he can do is try to talk to him, try to do a better job than he did with Cliff. Otherwise it isn't up to him. The thought stresses him out, but he gives him a (tense) nod of understanding, appreciating his honesty.

And then the self-deprecation comes, and Fern stops scrubbing his hand to look up.]

You're the furthest thing from cruddy.

[That's one of the few things he's certain of right now, and he shifts closer to latch onto Varian in a tight hug.]

I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't come up here. [Maybe stab more people, honestly.]

[Varian doesn't really believe Fern when he tells him that he's the furthest thing from cruddy. He's been feeling a lot worse lately, those inner demons biting a lot harder than they usually do.

Still, he doesn't shy away from the hug, he returns it- because it's what Fern needs right now. If helping Fern out is what he does with the last few trickles of decency left inside him, then at least he used them well. ]

Well. I wouldn't have abandoned you. Not after that. [He's still worried, he's still so very, very worried.] Are- are you gonna be okay?

[He really, really does need the hug right now. The physical contact is a good way to ground him, and his grass settles down a bit more.]

I don't know.

[That, unfortunately, isn't a question he can answer. He isn't melting down anymore but he's still afraid to leave the tree, of what might be going on in the town and of something setting off his mind and causing another panic attack.]

I feel... shaky. Like I'm gonna crumble into pieces again at any second.

[Varian hugs Fern a little tighter, wishing for all the world he could take this pain away for him. It wasn't fair that Jon did this to him - that he pushed Fern to this point. He had no right to do that. None at all.]

I can stay up here as long as you need. I've got nowhere important to go.

[Except maybe to yell at Jon. Probably shouldn't do that.]

[Fern really, really does not want to let go. He does though, after a few seconds.]

You sure you're not gonna boil up here?

[He appreciates Varian wanting to stick by him, but being up here for an extended period of time can't be good for a human. It can't be great for him either, with the herbicides in the air.]

I, uh, I'd be okay with finding a cold basement to hide in for a while.

[It isn't the same as crawling into a hole and never coming out, but it's close.]

[It is really warm up here, and Varian knows dehydration is... very likely. It's not like he brought any supplies up here, he kind of just ran to find Fern- that took priority. He offers a smile.]

...A cold basement would be preferable, yeah. I'd rather not boil.

Okay.

[He really doesn't need the guilt of hurting a third person on his shoulders today, either. Going back into town isn't something he's eager to do, but going with Varian makes the thought tolerable. If anyone confronts him then at least he won't be alone.

He leans over, looking at the height they'll have to climb down.]

Uh, I can get us down fast, if you don't mind me carrying you.

[Varian looks down at the drop below them. Does he really want to climb down the tree again? Not really. He gives a shrug.]

Sure, why not. It's gotta be better than getting half the tree stuck in my hair again.

Then hold on.

[Fern climbs to his feet, then in one quick movement scoops Varian up and hops off the branch like it's no big deal. One nice thing about a grass body: no bones to break.

He's jumping down fast, but at least won't just go from their branch straight to the ground, instead using a couple large branches in between to slow down their descent. Still, it isn't pleasant, and Fern hits the ground hard when they reach it.]

[You know, Varian had been expecting Fern to maybe make some vines and swing them down. That's the kind of move Rapunzel would make with her hair. He was used to a move like that. He was not expecting Fern to just straight up jump out of the tree.

And as such he lets out a very undignified yelp as he clings to Fern for dear life, screwing his eyes shut tight and only opening one when he feels the thud as they make contact with the ground. ]

Oh my god, I didn't think you meant I'm gonna jump out of the tree.

[Vine-swinging certainly would have been cooler and flashier, it's too bad Fern is going for the most straightforward route down. He doesn't expect the yelp and looks surprised when they reach the ground.

And a little awkward. This is more clinging than he expected.]

It's how I usually get out of trees. Uh... are you good to stand?

[Even Varian can catch the awkward this time. He lets out a nervous chuckle, releasing his death-grip on Fern and moving to stand, rubbing the back of his neck. ]

Heh. Sorry. I'm good. I'm fine.

[He's just gonna go right ahead and follow the standard procedure of burying that awkward under several layers of denial. It's all good. Totes fine. ]

You know, I kind of expected vines. Or something.

[Right, yes, okay, Fern is more than happy to let go of Varian if he's sure his legs are not currently jelly. And after a beat, he holds out his apron as well.]

...... Vines would've been a good idea, yeah.

[Wow good job, not thinking of the way of getting out of the tree that would've resulted in less awkwardness, dingus.]

But if you're good then - that's good.

[Yup that is... good. Good.]

Oh well, we'll bank it for another time we end up in a tree

[It's good. It's fine. Nothing to see here. He takes the apron, casting it a glance because... yup, sure is covered with pink blood now. He folds it up so the blood is on the inside and slings it over his arm. It... probably wouldn't be smart walking around town with his apron covered in blood. ]

You gonna be okay walking into town?

[He gives a little nod at that and makes a mental note. Vines, next time.

And he looks a great deal less sure about the answer to that question.]

Dunno. [There's a pause and - ] Can we avoid the library?

[That seems like a good idea, for multiple reasons.]

Sure we can, we can give it a wide berth.

[Damnit, Jon, if you've ruined the library for Fern after it's taken Varian literal months to get the guy to enjoy a book, he's gonna be so pissed.]
