That kind of plays into what I'm referring to when it comes to silver eyes. There are people out there who have gone out of their way over the years to destroy any information about them. They've also hunted and killed us because of our abilities.
I think that's why I'm the only only who still has them.

That's terrible. I'm sorry to hear that. That's... well, there's no good reason to kill people, but that's a really bad reason.
[He makes a mental note of that though. She said her mother had them, and if she's the only person left with them...well, two and two make four. He sucks in a breath- he's kind of glad this is over text- it means he doesn't have to worry about a waver in his voice- he doesn't have to worry about giving up him running away. He can just... say it. ]
So. There are these black rocks in my world. They're a whole complicated thing but all you need to know is that they're unbreakable and they are taking over our world. They raise up from the ground in sharp spikes. They were taking over my village- destroying homes, crops, everything.
My dad is the village leader. He went to the King to talk about them and I went with him. But dad had a past I didn't know about- which again, complicated, but he was supposed to protect the knowledge of the rocks away from everyone. So he lied to the King. Said nothing was wrong. I told the Princess this and she promised she'd help me work things out. I just wanted to help my village.
Dad forbade me from touching the rocks, but I didn't listen. I created a compound that made an amber that would encase them. Dad found out and rushed in- he pushed me out of the way of the expanding amber and got stuck in it himself. It was encasing him with the rocks.
[He still has nightmares about it. Seeing his father slowly being swallowed alive by an experiment he made himself.]
I went to the Princess for help. Her hair reacted to the rocks- they were connected somehow. I begged her to help me, but she was dealing with a snowstorm that was engulfing her Kingdom, and her parents were missing. She couldn't come. By the time I got back home to my dad, the amber had encased him completely.
This is all just the setup, by the way. For your siding scale of awfulness.

She understands a complicated situation better then anyone. So she takes a moment to let it sink in. She can't help but draw parallels to what had happened between Salem and Ozma. The desperation, the secrets. She didn't know what was coming next but she had feeling she knew the tune.]

The Princess got her magical hair powers from a flower. I decided that maybe THAT would be able to break the rocks and free my father. But I didn't trust her to help me on her own any more. I decided she betrayed me- I was stupid, and wrong, but there you go. I drugged the guards with a truth serum and found out where the flower was hidden. Then I conned Rapunzel into taking me through the castle to find it. I used her, and I didn't even care. When he found it, it was rotting, but I took the whole thing anyway- I forced her to commit treason and I ran with it.
The flower didn't even work. The magic in it had gone. It did nothing to free my dad, and that's when I realised the magic wasn't in the flower any more- it was all in Rapunzel. I needed her, but I'd burned THAT bridge. So I created a distraction in the kingdom. I turned Ruddiger into a monster and unleashed him on the town. He tore up the guards pretty badly, and while everyone was dealing with him, I kidnapped the Queen to use as bait to lure Rapunzel to my lab.
[Ruddiger survived, and it didn't hurt him any, but he COULD have died, and Varian didn't even care any more. It was all a means to an end. Everything was, at that point, and everything and everyone was simply cannon fodder for that goal. ]

She couldn't deny that it sounded pretty awful. Still there was a more human side to what Varian had to say and ending to the story that hadn't appeared in her own.]

She did. She and the King came to save the Queen. What remained of the guards and a handful of Rapunzel's friends tried a direct assault, but I set up a bunch of automatons. They kept them busy. I laid a trap for Rapunzel and the King. I forced Rapunzel to help me. I could have just asked her but I didn't, I gave her a choice. I released my amber solution by the Queen. She either helped me or the amber would take her mother like it took her father. So. Not really a choice at all.
I didn't even know if using her hair on the amber would have killed her- I knew there was a chance and I didn't care. It didn't work. Nothing worked. The King and Queen got free and I just snapped. I got aboard one of my automatons and attacked them. I literally told Rapunzel that if I couldn't have a happy ending, then she couldn't either. I tried to crush the queen and Rapunzel's best friend to death with my machine. I was killing them. But Rapunzel figured out her connection to the rocks and stopped me, destroyed my mechanical army and I went to jail for a year for high treason.
And you know, even THEN after ALL that, she still asked them to go easy on me. After everything. Because that's the kind of person she is.
[Rapunzel has always been an endless well of goodness and forgiveness in a way Varian could never understand. She really was the epitome of the Sundrop. ]
Anyway, Rapunzel went off on an adventure to understand the rocks better while I was in jail. I had time to reflect and realise what I did was wrong. When I was there, I met an extremist in there. He convinced me to help him and his people take over the Kingdom. I wiped the memory of the King and Queen and aimed to do it to everyone else, too. I figured that was the only way I could be forgiven. Rapunzel showed up and the extremists told me they were gonna destroy Corona instead. I didn't want any more people to get hurt. So I helped Rapunzel stop them. I cleaned up the mess I made. I tried to sacrifice myself to keep everyone safe, but she didn't let me.
[And god, he'd been HAPPY for the airship to blow with him aboard. Because that would have solved everything. All the pain he was carting around, the fact that he'd done so much harm. But Rapunzel didn't let him, she'd saved his life. Given him a second chance that he never wanted to waste.]
Corona was saved, Rapunzel used her new powers to save my dad and I was given a ticket to freedom. I've been trying to make up for everything since then. Trying to help her deal with the latest threat to the kingdom. Trying to make the world better than what I did to it.

The lengths he had gone to save his father. The lengths he had went to try and make people forget what he had done after. It reminded her a lot of the lengths that Salem had went to bring Ozma back and the lengths she had gone to defy the Gods and their punishment.
There was a key difference in those stories though. Varian was trying to make up for what he had done and Salem was still... Salem. If Varian's friends. If the people he had done this too had been able to give him another shot. She felt the like the least she could do is give him the same chance. He hadn't given her any reason to not trust him here. He had saved her life. She had spent time with people who thought they were pariahs and people who actually were. He was good people now as far as she was concerned even if he hadn't always been.
She's probably spent a little too much time thinking this over, but he had typed it and she had to mull it all over now.]

I don't really know what to say to all of that. If all of that is true and I don't have any reason not to believe you. Then it sounds like you had a real streak of awful in your life. It sounds like you were hurt and you hurt people right back whether they deserved it or not. That is pretty despicable I won't argue with that.
At the same time you were trying to save your dad. I don't know what I lengths I would go to do the same thing. I know that I put my life on the line to save anyone I can whenever I can. I can understand wanting to do whatever was in your power to help someone.
I can't really judge you based off what you did in the past. It's not my place to do that. I can only trust in what I've seen you do and what you've told me. It sounds like it would have been a lot easier for you not to tell me all this and carry on the way you we've going. You didn't take the easy way out. You were honest and you put everything you had on the table knowing this could blow up in your face. I've met a lot of people who wouldn't be willing to do the same thing if they were pressed to.
Your friends at home were willing to give you a second a chance. They seemed to think that you were worth it. I want to believe in the same Varian that they believed in. I'll put my trust in the Varian who went into a burning building to save his friend.
I can't take away the guilt you feel for what you did there. I can't forgive you for anything you've done back there. All I can do is trust in who you are now. All I can do is be here for you now.
Thank you for telling me all of this, for trusting me with your story. It was very brave of you.

It would be smarter for her to just cut her losses and run now. Because he'd been a mess and he was still a mess. A part of him was always worried he was only a small misstep away from becoming a monster again- because he was sure a part of him was still broken and awful. Why would he inflict that on someone like her?
But she does respond. And he takes his time to mull over her answer. It's a better response than he expected- by a long way. Not quite the utter forgiveness Rapunzel provided him, and he's glad of that. Rapunzel's attitude is smothering sometimes- she may be trying to make him feel accepted and better, but it only serves to remind him how terrible he is. At least Ruby is more grounded than that and he's glad for it. ]
It's... a lot, I know. And I needed to tell you. You matter a lot to me. You deserved the truth. Then at least you could make more informed choices about spending time with me. It didn't feel fair any more, keeping you in the dark. It wasn't exactly lying, but it was close enough. Hiding the truth from you didn't feel like a real option any more, brave or not.
I don't expect forgiveness, I sure don't deserve it. But thank you. For that. And for hearing me out. If you want to bail out now, you absolutely can. I genuinely wouldn't blame you. No hard feelings.

[Fenr pointed out there's a damn good chance Deerington will force him back the other way one day- that it had a knack for such things. He's under no allusions that maybe that might be the case one day. That he'll backslide and make a mess of things again.

[She had gotten that spiel herself. That this place was going to change her and there were just things she wouldn't stop here. That she wouldn't be able to keep all the promises she had made. Maybe they were right but she wasn't going to just accept something like that without a fight.
