It's a surprise, but I think you'll like it. Assuming I can get them there in one piece on the vespa. Might need to take the bus.

I'm trying. It's just seeing it all clearly after. Well after all that. It's a lot. But everyone's back and everyone is mostly able to get around now. Just the minor death flu effects. And figuring out where to go from here.

I think we'll be okay. I think. We just need time.

[She definitely notes that pause. It doesn't surprise her.]

That was good idea on his part.

PLease don't do anything dangerous on the vespa. If the bus is safer take the bus.

I'm glad to hear that, though. Time is all that'll make things better, I think. Or... less awful, anyway.

Yeah, they've really come in useful. Technically what I do is more hopping than stepping these days.

Don't worry. I'll switch to audio once I get move. Since text to voice is apparently the worst. Like jeez louise. I just have a few boxes on a wagon tied to the back. It should be fine.

I'm just doing what I can for them... Yang, Uncle Qrow and Clover are strong. They'll get through this. I have to make sure someone is checking up on Raven too. Oscar is helping me though, so we should have it covered.

I remember the adventures with text to voice, let's not do that again. That was a weird time. And I stand by my safety concerns with the vespa.

At least you have numbers on your side. A lot more people to take care of one another. That's something, at least.

[She can't hear him, but he gives a soft 'heh' at that.]

Okay, well now I'm curious.

It could have been worse. We ended up getting soup. It all worked out in the end.

Fine fine. I've even got a helmet on this time.

It is. More than a little lucky compared to other people that I have family around.

[She realized that but she also realized it came with it's own unique set of challenges.]

[He probably wont be able to see from his window. But he'll hear the approach of the vespa from out the window. More so as it goes over the curb once or twice and Ruby squeals as she tries her best to prevent the wagon she has tied to it from toppling over.

Then there's some banging around down stairs as she shuffles her way up the stairs with a couple trips of boxes.

Eventually she gives his door and knock and steps in with a few boxes and a rolling desk chair in tow.]

Ta-dah~! Hey there.

We did end up getting soup. And thank you for indulging in my concerns for your continued existence on this mortal coil.

[When she gets to him, he is at least dressed- albeit with one of his pant legs pinned up now, sitting on top of his bed, rather than in it. It's better than lying down all the live-long day. He smiles in greeting as she comes in.]

Hi. Wow, you weren't kidding, that's a lot of stuff.

[Honestly she was glad to see that he was up and about and dressed to the best of his ability. The memories of Yang after she lost her arm were still fresh in her mind. The way she had shut down after losing a piece of herself and how the people she loved hadn't been there for her through the whole thing. Ruby had made the choices she believed she had to at the time but it didn't mean there weren't regrets tied to those choices. She wasn't about to do make them all over again.]

Hey. I just had a couple idea. I thought they'd help out.

[She rolled the chair in first setting it up beside his bed.]

First off if you're going to be doing any work up here you're going to need this.

[She then steps back and picks up a couple of the boxes and sets them down beside him on the bed.]

I've got some stuff for a work bench and some rolling shelves, along with a few other things.

[There's a part of him that does want to shut down. To slam up his walls and just give up. But Varian's is a stubborn asshole, and more of than not, his desire not to be beaten overrides everything else. He might be functioning largely on pure spite against Deerington right now, but functioning he is. ]

Oh, the chair has little wheels on it. That's clever.

[Not like a wheelchair. That would feel limiting, like admitting that his life has changed forever. It still has, but he appreciates this middle ground to at least let him pretend he can gain something of his old existence back. ]

Wait... really? [A smile tugs at his lips.] Like... like a genuine workspace?

[She certainly wouldn't blame him for shutting down if he had. She had watched the people she was closest with struggle with that often and he had suffered a lot of hurt to justify it. The fact he was willing to fight on as hard as he did was encouraging to her.]

It's pretty neat, right? Just a little push with your foot and you should be able to get around the room no problem.

[A wheel chair would be a bit more limiting with what directions he could go in at any given time. The desk chair could swivel in and turn in ways that the other couldn't. She had put some thought into what she was picking him up.

She sees that smile and returns it with a warm one of her own.]

That's what I was thinking. It'll be kind of like what we have at the warehouse, but in here. And for you.

I thought we could build the table and shelves together and then we can take a trip down stairs and pick out anything you need from the lab. How does that sound?

[The temptation is there, and it's always likely down the line- when something else lands in his lap and pushing him just that little bit past breaking point. But for now, he's dealing with it- even if he's not really dealing with it.]

That is pretty neat. I could get around the room no problem.

[He'd rather be able to walk around, but that's not an option, so he's going to have to live with this. Reluctantly. ]

Thanks, Ruby. This is... pretty good. I've been getting cabin fever stuck up here with nothing to do for weeks.

[If she can give him the means to deal with it at his own pace than she's happy to do just that. She wont force him into anything he's not ready for yet. She remembers the pushback she got from Yang when that happened. She's a little older and a little more understanding this time around.]

[She feels a warm smile tug at her lips when to hear him say that.]

It's the least I can do, really. I know you're not the type to just sit still while life is happening around you. And... Well it's been tough given how the last month has been.

I thought setting you up so you could get back to work was important.

[She's careful not to say back to normal. Normal... isn't normal for him anymore and it's going to take time to find out just what his new standard will be from here on out.

She shifts the boxes a little closer to him and pulls out a handful of tools to help them with assembling the contents.

She moves to step out of the room and returns with another box containing a basket ball net and a laundry hamper that has the words "Mr.Fluffer's House." Stitched into it.]

I also noticed Mr.Fluffers seems to end up under your bed most of the time. You've got a good arm so I figured you could throw him into the net and he'd land in his own little home.

I guess you could throw your laundry in there too but that's kind of up to you.

I love it, thank you. It so, so much better than sitting still forever. I think I'll lose it if I have to do much more of that.

[He's read all his books at least five times each and he's counted all his ceiling tiles about twenty times over. This is saving his sanity.]

Yeah, I have a lot of important projects that have had to be put on hold.

[Like Eda's potion. That's a BIG one. That's on a timescale and not a big one.

He snorts out a laugh at the basketball net and laundry hamper. ]

That would be more satisfying than shoving him under the bed, that's true. It's good practice for my throwing arm, too.

[After everything that's happened it's just nice to see him happy. It's nice to not be worrying for everyone's lives and to just have a moment to take stock of where they're at.]

Well having just tried that, I really don't recommend it. So let's just keep you busy for at least a little while. Last thing we need is no science and no alchemy turning Varian into a dull boy.

[If he could make jokes about his leg than she could joke about going insane. It was only fair.

Ruby sets the basket ball net and the hamper down and goes for the boxes on his bed. Starting to cut those open to reveal the pieces of the desk, shelving and rolling cabinets they'd be making.]

Well let's get started on these. Then we can make a trip down stairs and you can point out what you need to bring up here.

[She's just beaming to hear him laugh. She's glad she had made the right calls.]

No ones going to know what hit them when you start throwing those alchemy bombs again.

I think Mr.Fluffers will like the airtime too. What kind of crazy demon doll wouldn't?

I doubt it would make me dull. Pretty sure it'd make me the opposite of that which is just as unwanted in all honestly.

[Bored Varian tends to do things he really shouldn't- like toy with the laws of nature and the cosmos at large. Let's not let him get bored.

He grabs his crutches, getting up (albeit a little wobbly) moving over to her.]

Great. And yeah, I don't wanna get rusty while I'm stuck on bedrest.

To be fair the guy in the movie went more crazy than dull too. He had an axe and everything. But yeah, you've got a point.

[She waits for him to get closer wary of the wobbling but not jumping to him immediately to assist. It was strength he was going to have to build up on his own and she didn't want to treat him like he was fragile, it was one thing to do that in a fight it was another thing to do it now.

But she waits for him to get closer before she starts opening up more boxes with work desk pieces. She sets the long wooden slab that would make up the desk top on the floor and starts to search for the sides of it.]

Think you can track down the instruction and bag of little screws and pegs?

[She flashes him one more smile.]

The last thing we're going to do is let you get rusty. I promise.

Okay, that's a fair point he did go pretty crazy. I don't want to end up trying to murder any of you with an axe.

[He'd deeply appreciate her holding back. The last thing he wants to feel right now is fragile, lesser. The portrait of his parents sits on one of the walls now and the thought of his father watching him in any capacity does wonders for his resolve.

He peers into the boxes, shifting his weight onto one crutch to poke around in them- not quite ready to start to try to bend over yet, he's pretty sure his balance isn't there.]

Here you go. This one.

[He does love him some schematics. He offers a smile, it's a touch apologetic, a touch amused- but there's frustration lurking at the corners of it.]

Uh... can you grab it for me? I don't think I can lean down yet.

I'd rather not either. I've been clear of people wanting to do that for a couple months now and I don't want to add anyone to the list.

[She had seen the portrait once or twice coming in. His father looked exactly like the kind of knight she had expected him to be and well... Baby Varian was adorable too.

She eyes the bag of screws and the schematics and picks them up to hand to him.

She catches the look in his eyes and that smile and she can't help but feel the wind get sucked out of her sails a little. Her heart ached to see him like that and she knew she stepped into this sensitive subject herself.

She swallows and presses on.]

Right-Sorry. My bad.

Do you want a hand getting down?

[He watches her for a moment, noting the demeanour change. This feels uneasy and wrong. He's not comfortable with needing this much help yet. He's been pretty independent for the vast majority of his life - his dad had always just... left him to it. Having to rely on other people so utterly and completely is a blow to his pride.

He's nothing if not ceaselessly stubborn, though. He frowns at the ground like it's issued a direct challenge to him. Can't get down here alone, ha ha. ]

I think I've got it.

[He absolutely does not got it. There are a few false starts as he tries to work out how the hell to get down, a little shuffling of his remaining foot and his crutches. Eventually, he settles for trying to shimmy his arms down his crutches while bending his knee at the same time, but he's not used to the change in his centrifugal balance yet and he inevitably crumbles forward, catching himself on one of the boxes before he hits the deck completely, crutches clattering to the ground. He swears softly under his breath, trying to ease himself down from there.

He hates all of this. ]

[Part of Ruby wants to jump up and help him. It wasn't just the Huntress in her, she worried and cared for him too much and it made her heart ache to see him struggling like this. She didn't want to force it on him and by the look of that frown she's knows it wouldn't end well to try. This was something he felt he had to do.]

Alright.

[She keeps back and lets him try with worry in her eyes. She wouldn't know where to start on actually giving him advice so she doesn't try. She cringes when he suddenly crumbles against the box. She jumps up but doesn't immediately go to his aide, instead she moves to collect his crutches first. She then moves to his side and offers her arm and one of the crutches if he wants to take the support.]

You're almost there.

[A part of him wants to snap that he's fine- that old touch-paper temper of his. But it's not her fault- none of this is her fault, and he doesn't want to lash out at her for trying to help. Especially when she's not smothering him. So he bites down on his anger, sucks it back.

He takes the arm offered, lowering himself down onto the floor. He puts his crutches to one side, sucking in a deep breath. He should probably talk about it, that would be the healthy thing- that's what people keep telling him he needs to do. But he doesn't want to, not yet. So he buries it all inside again, opening out the schematics. ]

Right. So. Let's get to it.

[She catches him bite down on his anger and she has to make an effort to not let the concern on her face show. She was the queen of internalizing her problems and she was at least somewhat aware of that it wasn't healthy for OTHER people to do. She doesn't quite know how to broach that topic at the moment though.

So she helps lower him down and moves to get everything they need together.]

Yeah. Do we start with the desk drawers or the legs?

[He knows it's not the right stance to take. He and Fern had a good, long talk about refusing to deal with a lost limb. He knows he needs to find a healthier way of handling this. But right now he can't face the dark, open chasm of hurt he has to cross in order to deal with it. So repression it is.

He squints at the schematics. ]

Well, I think it would be a good idea to go for the drawers first. Make all the requisite pieces together, legs can always come last.

Gotchya. Let's do that first.

[She knows it's hard and complicated to deal with what he's gone through. Which is why she isn't pushing him to talk about it quite yet. He'll get there when he's ready and the best she could do was support him along the way.

She starts to fumble through the pieces they have to find the ends to the drawers. She moves to place the two walls along when it looks like they should go on the bottom end of the table.]

Is this right?

[There's a little knowing look when he makes the remark of legs coming last.]

They don't have to either. We can work on them whenever you're ready.

[He starts shifting through the pieces, making sure they have everything they need. This is... nice. Easy, straightforward work. Something to focus on that's NOT all the awful mess they've been through.

He glances up, offering a smile.]

Looks good to me. We need to get these screws into each of the corresponding holes. That are already drilled for us, yay for the future of flat pack furniture.

[It's refreshing to see him smile like that. After everything she was worried it might be a little harder for him to do that, but it looked like putting him to work was the right move to make.

She nods at his explanation and shifts to hold the boards closer to the holes. She'll move to grab the screws and put them in the holes.]

It's pretty darn handy, right? I'm glad Earth has these too. Super handy back home.

Alright, how about you screw those ones in on that side and then I'll get the ones on this side?
