Your little friend-- [And that word there is just dripping with contempt.] -- Glitch electrocuted me. He must have killed some of the circuitry in my legs, because now they're not working at all.

[Maul was furious about it and already plotting the teen's next death.]

[Oh Maul, oh Maul this is not the best way to start this at all. Varian wants to help, of course he does- but he's not stupid. He's well aware of how dangerous Maul can be, that tone is not comforting.]

...Why? Glitch wouldn't attack someone else out of the blue. What happened? Was it an accident? Something to do with the town?

[Because Varian is well, well aware that Deerington can push people into things they wouldn't normally do. ]

I'm just asking because you've got a tone about it and I gotta admit, I'm not a fan.

Maybe if he learned to shut his fucking mouth-- [Apparently hanging around Reaper over the last month has gotten Maul to start cursing more, at least when he was extremely pissed off.] --and not stand there disrespecting people, he might live longer.

[Of course Maul was failing to take into account the moon affecting people, his own lack of sleep, and just the general loss of control everyone in town seemed to be feeling.]

No one bothered to tell me the boy has lightning attacks!

[There was something beyond anger in those words...could it be just a hint of fear? Maul, like any number of people who had been abused, used his own anger to cover up the terror that had left scars on him during his childhood.]

Yeah, that's probably never going to happen. Pigs have got a better chance of sprouting wings. But that's just how he is.

[The anger and the... fear? It sounds like fear, are painting a picture- but it's not a good one. He trusts Maul a great deal- he's one of the most important people Varian has in this place. He's like a grouchy, murderous uncle.

But Glitch is like his brother. And brother trumps uncle every time.]

He only uses those when he's feeling threatened. Did you make him feel threatened? Is he hurt?

Fern and you are incapable of shutting your mouths either, but I have never held that against you.

[He says snarkily. It wasn't entirely that which caused him to dislike Glitch. He and the boy had just gotten off on entirely the wrong foot and had never corrected course. Maul growls out his next words, low and angry.]

He wouldn't be quiet. Everything is so loud right now and getting near people only makes it worse. Everything was bleeding over from him and he wouldn't just remain quiet.

[Maul's not always great at explaining himself, especially when most people here didn't even have a basic idea of how his telepathic powers worked.]

Him? Hurt? He's not the one who got electrocuted!

[Aside from a bruised trachea, Glitch was fine. Maul, on the other hand, was a bit indignant at basically being an afterthought right now, despite being the one who'd instigated the whole thing. Sometimes, Maul had no idea of the concept of foresight.]

No, you didn't, so why is Glitch any different? Why does he get all this vitriol pointed at him? You could have just moved away or something? Did you even ask him to be quiet.

[Sorry, Maul. He's already exhausted and kinda touchy, this is not helping at all.]

Then I'm sorry for that. But you can't blame me for being worried about my housemate. You're a thousand times more dangerous than he is and you're not coming across as especially hospitable to someone I share a roof with. Surely you can see where that's a problem.

I did ask him. He proceeded to tell me exactly what he thought of me, which was a lot of insults.

[He pauses a moment, lets himself cool down just a little, and goes on to explain. He's not really all that eloquent when it comes to actually telling people what is going on with himself, one of the many things he has trouble expressing in a healthy manner.]

I can feel people's thoughts and emotions when I am around them. Normally, I am better at blocking it all out, but right now, it's all bleeding over into my mind. Imagine not just hearing what someone thinks towards you, but feeling it as well. Of course I got angry at him for that.

I'm aware that Glitch is pretty... highly strung. Did you explain it to him reasonably, or did you just screech at him?

[He's still decidedly NOT helping. He's trying to understand this.]

I just don't get how it escalated to him electrocuting you. He doesn't just lash out with his powers like that. Only when he feels like he has to. This isn't like him, so I need you to help me understand why it happened.

[.........Yup, it was a whole lot of screeching.]

I threatened to teach him some manners. I wasn't planning on actually hurting the boy-- [A lie.] --I just wanted to scare him. But when he shocked me.....[Maul lapses into silence, trying to remember himself how it felt, wondering if he should trust Varian with this.] .....I didn't see him. I saw my old master, the way he'd done that to me a thousand times as a child. I panicked, thinking I was killing him, when in truth I was trying to kill Glitch.

[Goddamnit, Maul. Varian lets out an unsteady breath, rubbing his face with his hand. ]

Well. This is what happens when your go-to solution to a problem is to get angry and on the attack. I need to talk to Glitch. I need to find out if he's okay. And you- I don't know. I need to make sure my friend isn't hurt. Maybe when you want to come to me for help, don't attack the people I care about beforehand?

I'm really disappointed in you.

[There isn't anything Varian says that isn't true about Maul. As he's often said himself, the truth can hurt far worse than any lies ever could. He could apologize, try to say he'll do better or at least try harder. Or he could do the Maul thing and get angry. No prizes for guessing that he does the latter.]

If you care so much more about him than me, I shan't trouble you again.

[He sounds, beyond the obvious anger in his voice, a little hurt. He'd trusted Varian enough to come to him for help in a vulnerable moment and this was how he'd reacted. Why did he ever even bother with people?]

It's not about caring, Maul. I care about you a lot, but right now I really wish I didn't.

[Is this how Rapunzel felt? When he'd turned on her- stabbed the knife into her back and twisted it? A part of him feels guilty for not showing Maul empathy right from the get-go. But he didn't learn his lessons from being coddled. He doubts Maul would, either.

Still, he can't leave Maul completely defenceless. ]
