[She'd feel bad to know it wasn't his secret to keep, or she'd be mad to know it was something that could put him in danger without her knowing. As it stands with what she knows the best she can do is be wary. She hates that one secret coming out has just led to another. She worries that once that one does come out there will only be more to take it's place. It reminds her too much of Oz for her liking.

She shifts on the spot uncomfortably. She hated this, more than anything. It didn't sit well with her how easy it was for him to give up on this either.]

I don't think it was ever supposed to be easy. Life would be a lot simpler if it was.

But... Alright.

[Ruby finally moves to close the distance between the two of them. She lets a hand rest on his shoulder, it's cautious but she tries to make it as comforting as she can.]

The only thing I can suggest is that when you get everything sorted out. Do what makes you happy. ...One day that might mean you have to make a choice that you doesn't sit well with everyone.

We said we'd be together until we agreed it wasn't working out any more. If this doesn't work out, or if you think you'd be happier with Fern, or If I don't like where things are going.

...Well I'll step aside.

Yeah... I guess that's true.

[His shoulder is tense under her hand, like a coiled spring. He's been so scared of saying any of this. Not for himself, of course not, for himself, he doesn't like himself enough to go that far. He's scared of hurting her worse than he already has. She's going through so much already and here he is dumping his stupid, complicated emotions on her.

He listens to what she has to say and that's... well, it's better than he expected. It's not a perfect solution, but he's pretty sure there isn't one. None of them know what they're doing here anyway. He's not got the requisite life experience to know how to steer this emotional mess, he's just doing the best he can. ]

Okay. That's- that's fair. [There's something that Usagi said to him that comes to mind- and it's important for Ruby to know.] I still love you. I...um. Pretty sure I always will, no matter what happens. But I don't- I don't want you to be obligated by that, either. You deserve to be happy, and I really want you do do that. Whatever that... whatever that ends up being.

[Her expression softens feeling just how tense he was. There was a lot not to like about what they had said today, but she also did understand that Varian was entitled to have the feelings that he had. She hated the secrets but... At least one had been answered for and she knew there was another. He had made an attempt and she did appreciate that despite the bitter taste it left.

She wishes she had a better solution to offer him. Where things stood at the moment it was all she offer.

She ponders over his words carefully for a moment and then shifts so she can let her hands wrap around him and pull him into loose hug.]

Varian. There hasn't been a second that I've been with you because I felt obligated to.

I'm happy to be here and I want you to be too.

But if that were to ever stop you'd be the first one to know. I promise.

Because I still love you too.

[He doesn't hug her back immediately. He wasn't expecting it and he freezes up in that way he does when he receives sudden, unexpected contact. It's only a moment though before he hugs her carefully back. Not tightly- it's cautious if anything.

He does take comfort from her words, though. They mean a lot. ]

I am happy, Ruby. I promise you that. No matter what you... well, you've always made me really happy. Happier than I've been in a really long time. [Much like he told her when he helped her banish her ghost.] None of that has changed.

[And he doubts it ever will, despite everything.]

Thank you. I think that's fair.

[She couldn't blame him for the surprise at the sudden contact or the cautious hug. She's sure this conversation didn't go quite the way either of them were hoping for.

She pauses when she hears him promise that. She knew how he felt about those and it made her hold on just a little harder. It gave her some hope to fight against the doubts she had about all this.]

I believe you.

And... I know it's been hard lately. But I think we can make things better, if we stick together we can work this out.

[His arms curl a little tighter around her in response. He sucks in a slow, steady breath. It HAS been hard, and he's aware he's not made it any easier with this.]

Okay. That's... I think so too. That we can work it out. Thank you for understanding.

[But like anything else she hadn't signed up for this because she thought it would be easy. It felt like the right thing to do and he did make her incredibly happy.]

We've got this. I know it.

Don't mention it. You're entitled to your feelings, Varian. You always will be.

[She pauses briefly, just taking the moment to hold him there.]

I guess... Good luck with your next talk.

[There's a hint of uncertainty in her tone. She knew the last time Varian talked to Fern and feelings like this came into play it turned out he wanted to run her through with a sword.

She wanted to think that wouldn't be the case this time but... Well she didn't have anything to point her in the opposite direction. Their relationship hadn't really improved at all, backsliding back into that still felt like a real possibility to her.]

I know. But I wish they didn't hurt you, too.

[He knows this means he has to talk to Fern too. It's only fair. Usagi and Kurt were both pretty sure on that. He can't let Fern just be in the dark forever. He found he didn't want Fern to be in the dark. It felt both right and selfish at the same time. ]

Thanks. I um- I'll tell him what you said, too.

[To try and soften any anger Fern might feel towards her. That, ultimately Ruby was the stronger one of them and offered an out if it was needed. ]

Sometimes feelings get hurt, you can't always avoid that. But getting hurt isn't what's important here. It's about knowing how to keep moving forward after the fact.

[She gives a faint shrug. She kind of wishes she could tell Fern herself but she was more than confident that her words would fall flat to him. They had every time before.]

Yeah, sure. That's probably for the best.

[Her eyes glance down at catch the container of cookies sitting down beside them. She very subtly starts to angle themselves toward it.]

I'm glad at least one of us has enough optimism to see that.

[Because he sure as hell sucks at that. He catches the very unsubtle attempt at the cookies, and finally a tiny smile tugs at his lips. ]

Do you want the cookies now?

It's more than just optimism. It's experience too.

[She had suffered her fair share of pain and sorrow. She knew it would only get worse if let herself stew in it.

She smiles sheepishly.]

Yeah, kind of. These emotional conversations make me hungry.

[Most things make her hungry.]

Well, there is that, too, sure.

[Varian's had plenty of experience. He's just not been great at picking himself up from it. He does manage a small chuckle, reaching to grab the box and offering them to her.]

You say that like being hungry isn't a natural state of being for you.

[She knows he has the experience. She knows it's not as easy for other people to pick themselves up afterward, but they managed to pull through together. She's sure with help Varian can get there too at some point.]

Wow. Way to just call me out like that.

[She opens the box and takes one to pop it into her mouth. Then her hand promptly reaches in to grab another. She holds it a few inches away from his mouth.

She smiles and tilts his head.]

Waamph omph?

[Want one? She can't be the only one tired and hungry after all of this.]

Hey, I call it as I see it.

[He'll sheepishly take a cookie from her, chewing it thoughtfully. He's not all that hungry, honestly, his stomach is still churning from all the panic and unease he's been feeling for the last while. But he realises he should probably make an effort. ]

Thanks. They're mostly for you, though.

[She smiles when he takes the cookie. She knows how bad he can be at taking care of himself, more so when he's stressed out like this. She just wants to make sure he has at least a little fuel to help him go on.]

I know, I know. Weird news cookies, I get it.

But if they're mostly for me then I get to choose what I do with them.

[She manages to scarf down two more and then she reaches up to offer him another one.]

And I'm in a sharing kind of mood.

More like one for me a three for you, huh?

[It feels nice to be able to bring some teasing levity to this, after what was a horrible conversation. It feels almost normal. But she'd be right, he's been taking care of himself considerably less than usual. He takes another with a small smile. ]

But thanks.

Hey-You don't know that-Maybe I'm keeping count and will save you your fair share at the end. It's not a race!

[It's definitely a race. Sorry Varian.

And she's much happier to try and bring up the mood. She wasn't exactly sure what the future would bring for the both of them at this point. But she had said her piece and had meant it.

All she could really do was wait and see what choices Varian would make. Then she'd have to make her own.]

No problem.

She says, unhinging her jaw to devour all the cookies.

[He does say it with affection, though. Her little... quirks are what makes Ruby uniquely her. He was at least honest when he told her that he still loved her. Even if everything ahead of them is so... uncertain now. ]

[She shoots him an affectionate glare.]

Iffff naw tha bad!

[She says with three cookies currently stuffed into her mouth. Varian made good cookies, don't judge her. She swallows down the mass snack food and doesn't choke to death in the process.]

Just be glad I haven't developed an appetite for people while we've been here.

[And she offers him another cookie and just smiles softly. It was easier to focus on the here and now, she didn't want to dwell on a future that she didn't have any control over at the moment.]

[Ruby, you're terrifying and wonderful at the same time. A laugh bubbles out of him.]

Yeeaaaaah, let's not start trying out cannibalism. I feel like that's a dangerous road to travel here.

That's fair. It looked pretty darn disgusting when the whole cult thing happened. I'd rather stick to actual chicken or things that I know taste like it.

I think that's wise. Generally, I think it's smart not to eat any suspect food in this place.
