She glances back and forth a couple more times and makes a few more notes.]
I haven't seen any sign of it since the dome came up. The cat buses were the only way to get there when it was around and they were gone.
Which is a shame because they cat buses were like the cutest and cuddliest form of public transportation around. Why can't we have nice things Deerington, why?
[Look. She really misses the buses. So there's a kitty face with a single tear on the page now. She has completely forgotten about the Squirrel Corn.]
no subject
It was pretty weird, Ruby. I mean, I guess, sure it was cute, but it was also riding inside a cat. Knowing this place, that would have ended up horrifying one way or another if it stuck around.
[Because everything turns awful here eventually. He peers a little at her doodle.]
Man, you must miss the cat bus, I was expecting a squirrel joke there.
no subject
It was weird in the best ways! It was riding inside of a cat! Where else are you going to get to do something awesome like that? Not back at home for me, that's for sure.
But yeah, I guess it could have gone horribly wrong but it didn't! And like that's gotta be worth something?
[She glances down at the paper and realizes she forgot to add in the squirrel stuff. There's quick squiggle in to add to Squirrel Corn to the list. Good catch, Varian.]
I'm telling you that Cat Bus was like the best. We haven't had any memorable squirrels here in Deerington yet.
Besides what kind of corny squirrel jokes could I even make?
no subject
I mean, there's always a chance something that stupidly whimsical could happen back home. There's literally a spell that turns people into birds, so-
[Not that the bird thing will be familiar to her at all, of course.]
Oh, I'm sure you could think of something. Knotweed got pretty badly damaged, I don't know if I can get more of these until things calm down in town a bit. Hopefully, they'll start springing up at the roadside again, but while the air's still recovering, guess not.
no subject
We would need a whole lot more magic for something crazy like that to hap-
Wait-Wait-Hold on a second!
Did you say turn people into birds?
We actually have that one back one.
[Magic that Ruby Rose recognizes that doesn't absolutely terrify her. That doesn't happen often.]
I mean I guess.
[She taps the quill on the page trying to think of something funny to draw about squirrels. She gives the page a frustrated look after a minute.]
Ugh! This is impossible!
[...That is until he mentions knotweed and suddenly inspiration strikes. There's a doodle of a squirrel kneeling over to tie his shoelaces knots.]
Nailed it~!
It'd be nice if the air could hurry up and freshen a bit more. I can't wait for the day I can walk outside and not smell pesticide anymore.
no subject
[No wait.]
I thought magic was mostly gone from your world?
[He looks at her doodle, letting out a soft, amused snort.]
Nicely done. And yeah. I want to be able to replant again. It'd make life easier for Fern, too.
no subject
[She let's a hand rest on his shoulder and gives it a little squeeze. They didn't need to dive any further into the prison thing if he didn't want to. She just wanted to show she knew that wasn't an easy time.
She gives a little shrug as they move onto magic.]
It is. It's an Ozpin thing. He and Salem can still do it. I don't know how it really works because of course I heard it from him, but he said he could use his power to give other people abilities. So there's a handful of people who've got it, including a two who can just turn themselves into birds.
It's kind of weird, kind of cool, more than a little unsettling but super useful?
[She gives a cheeky little grin at that too.]
Yeah... I can't imagine last month was very pleasant for him. How's he holding up anyways?
I wouldn't mind getting some work done on our garden. We lost just about everything last month.
no subject
[Look, he's learned at least some of his lessons when it comes to meddling with dangerous magic.]
...So it's magic. In your world. Or are you gonna tell me it's a semblance thing, too?
[He still thinks semblances are just magic regardless. Prove him wrong, Ruby.]
He's doing okay now. I managed to create a solution that stove off the worst of it. He wasn't doing so hot at the start- not that he'd admit it to anyone, of course.
Well, I'm sure Oscar can help with that. He's way better at the farming stuff than I am.
no subject
Unless I could get like a cool little Crescent Rose. Oh that could be cute.
[She's just going to stick her chin out and huff. It's mostly playful but she gosh is she stubborn about it.]
Wow. Are we doing this again? I can't believe we're doing this again.
Semblances. Aren't. Magic. They're totally different. There's like two weirdos who can do actual magic and they like I don't know-
infected?
bestowed?
lent magic to other people?
It's weird and I don't really get it.
[She can't win this argument but she will hold on stubbornly to it.]
That sounds about like him to a T. Well I'm glad he's doing alright at least.
He could, or we could always make it a group project. We could make cool green house kind of thing to protect them in case something like this happens again.
no subject
[Oh yes, he's gonna poke THIS bear again. Ain't no stopping him!! He smirks, smugly, because he knows he's right and this is just going to be something they will bicker about until they are both very, very old.]
Yes, this again. Okay but magic can't just go. That's not how magic works. What you have is blatantly the remnants of the magic in your world. Because non-magical people can't have super-speed and turn into rose petals or carry literal bad luck around them or do- whatever the heck it is that Yang does. Angry punching? I feel like it's Angry Punching. Besides, the point remains, semblances are totally magic. And I say that as someone who doesn't even like magic all that much. But I know it when I see it.
So the bird people do have magic, then. Borrowed magic?
[He snorts softly.]
Yeah, well. He's stubborn to the point of almost getting himself killed but what can you do? Fern's gotta Fern.
[He says it affectionately, all the same.]
That would be smart. I doubt the Betties will be back any time soon, but better to be safe than sorry.
no subject
I'd use my little birdy feet. I'd find a way to make it work.
[She can't believe it. They really are doing this again. There's a part of this drives her nuts but it's not all that awful. It was nice to talk about home. ]
Except I got to watch it go! The Lamp Lady let me watch two VERY angry Gods wipe out humanity and take off with it. They even smashed up the moon on their way out because they were that done with what was going on. They said we wouldn't have it again unless they came back. Their words not mine. If you want to argue it with them be my guest. I've seen what happens when they get angry.
It's not magic! It's just how things work back home. We have Semblances and they're connected to our Aura. Those make sense. They have rules to them. Magic just kind of does whatever the heck the person wants it to. They can turn people into birds! They aren't the same thing.
[...Give her a second here to take a breath before she mumbles.]
Angry punching is what I'm calling it from now on.
[Ugh. Okay. Back onto the magic talk.]
Yeah. As far as I know that's all they can do with it. Ozpin gave them the ability to do that so he they could be his scouts, I guess. Track down Salem's people and the Maidens for him.
[Okay. She can't help but chuckle at that comment about Fern.]
At least you can always count on him to be that? He's lucky to have a friend like you willing to help him out when he needs it.
[She can't say it affectionately but there's a hint of understanding in her tone. She's was pretty darn familiar with Fern's stubbornness at this point.]
They Betties might not come back but that doesn't mean the town won't find a way to do it again. I figure it's worth a shot to be prepared.
no subject
[Don't bring logic into a debate about turning into a bird, Varian, come on.]
But it works just like magic. Maybe they didn't take it all. Like naturally people can just like, do what you guys do. All the powers I know about come from magic back home. If it wasn't magic, how can there be so many variations? How can they mimic a person's truest self? There's too much for it to all line up as poetically as it does for it to not be magic.
[The science is RIGHT THERE, Ruby. And that science points to MAGIC.]
I mean, yay for them. Are they still scouts for him? Given... everything's kinda gone sideways there.
[A fond smile flickers across his face for a moment.]
Yeah, I'm really lucky to have him. He's always had my back even when we've been at odds with each other. He's about as loyal as you can get from a person. You both have that in common, too.
Oh yeah, to be sure. As prepared as we can be in this insane place, anyway.
no subject
[This is her only argument. It's going to crumble quickly after that.]
I guess that's possible? The god of Light and Darkness could be tricked, so they might not be sticklers for details and left some behind? I don't know I'm just going by what I've seen and what I know about the two of them. Magic just doesn't work the same. Seeing someone use it seems so limitless and varied. Like they can do basically anything they want with it. And that's not to say that Semblances aren't special but they're just that reflection of what that person can do.
It probably doesn't help that Ozpin probably had something to do with naming everything too... I don't know how big of a role he's played all throughout our history.
[Ruby folds her arms at that her smile fading a touch.]
One hadn't been working for him for long time, I think they had stopped before I was even born. The other found out at the same time as we did... And he didn't take it very well. He's working with me now.
[She pauses briefly, debating briefly whether to tell him or not. Qrow and Varian seemed to be getting along but she didn't want to overstep her Uncles trust in her.]
It's my Uncle and his sister. It's complicated.
[She lets her elbows rest on the table. It was cute watching him wax poetic about a friend.]
That's good. I mean he hasn't poked me full of holes so I really can't complain about him. If he's looking out for you that's good, that's all I can ask for.
[She was pretty sure Varian was the only thing really holding him back from doing that. But he was exercising restraint, it's hard to argue with results.]
