That's really fair. I mean... I can't see that happening [because he's HIM and kind of a constant disaster of a person] but we're both stuck with... geez, I don't even know how long lives. Neither of us can predict the future. That makes sense, and the same goes to you, too.

[He nods, relieved that one went over well]

Of course! My dating prospects are... pretty terrible, but you're right. Anything can happen in the future.

[Varian had honestly given himself up for centuries of solitude at this point, but he hadn't seen Jun coming and here he is.

He sits back, considering for a moment.]

Okay, please don't worry that I'm like... abandoning you or anything if I vanish for a couple days. You've known me long enough to know how I get when I really get into a project. If I do that, it's not like... a reflection on how I feel about you or anything. I just get into my head sometimes. But if you message me, I will respond- I'll set a special alert noise just for you.

[He shrugs a little.]

I just don't want you to feel like you're doing anything wrong or... something if I do that. It'll never be a you thing.

Haha, alright. I already know how you are with projects, so I was thinking I'd just check in once a week to make sure you're still alive.

Is that reasonable?

That's more than reasonable. Honestly, you can tack on that you're allowed to actually take me out when you do that because otherwise I might not see the sun for a month again and that's... probably not super healthy. I'll try and go along with minimal complaining.

[He is at least aware that he really does need to try to exist as a human being outside of his work- baby steps!]

[Finally, a means to make him have human interaction while he works. If it's something he can enjoy maybe he'll finally get better at it! Stranger things have happened.

[He rather not have to drag him out of a place kicking and screaming.

He'll swallow his next bite before moving to touch his upper arm. A glowing cross appears.]

Mm, it's proof of what I am, essentially. Except I'm not really meant to go around showing it off to just anyone.

Varian sips his drink, his eyebrows raising as the cross appears.]

Huh. That's pretty cool. Um... thanks for showing me. [ Because it's important to acknowledge that Jun choosing to share this is important.] Does... does it hurt, or... anything? If questions are okay.

[He'll pull his hand away so he can get back to eating, and the glowing will fade ]

Questions are fine. But no, it doesn't hurt. Most of the time I don't even think about it.

[Varian takes a few more thoughtful bites of his burger.]

Okay, that's good. Is it... safe for me to touch? Or- not? Just so if I know to avoid it.

[ You know, a sensible person would take that as a sign to maybe not take a chance, but Varian is a motherfuckin' scientist and the concept of blowing a limb off will not deter him from testing anything out.]

[He's just gonna reach over with one index finger and poke Jun's arm where the tattoo is. BOOP!]

[He sounds startled because SIR. SIR. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? But luckily - no death will come to Varian today. It'll light up briefly, but it won't fry him.

Jun's quickly scooting away though, out of reach of the poke.]

[Being an idiot, that's what he's doing. Varian doesn't seem bothered by what could have been a near-death experience, instead he nods, like he's making a mental note of how it reacted. It glows when touched- duly noted! He does at least drop the poking finger.]

What? Better to find out now than later.

[You chose this, Jun. You actively chose this. But he will at least, y'know, check in. After doing the stupid thing.]

[Jun meanwhile is trying to shake off the feeling of embarrassment. He's gotten so used to hiding that mark from the world, much less not letting anyone touch it. So to just have Varian poke it...!

Breathe. This is just how Varian is. Ever fucking curious when it comes to science stuff.]

[The fact Varian has survived to adulthood with his "just fucking touch it!" approach is, quite frankly, a minor miracle. He had at least developed enough social skills to realise that PROBABLY crossed a line and looks a little abashed clearing his throat and rubbing the back of his head.]

Sorry. Didn't mean to make you feel awkward. Yeah, prob-probably should've asked first. Mental note for next time!

[At being denied scientific notes, he looks like a kicked puppy. Noooo his science ideas :( :( :(]

[At the puppy eyes, he narrows his eyes and stares back for a long pause. Sir. ]

[Varian puts one hand on his chest, raising the other palm up.]

I promise I won't write a single thing down about it. And I don't make promises unless I can keep them.

[Which has always been the case for him, but now Jun has the context as to why. Promises are not something Varian messes around with - he can count on one hand the number of them he's made since coming to Kaisou.]

Don't worry, I mean it when I say no one's gonna find anything about that from me. It's a pretty important secret and I really do appreciate you sharing it.

[As Varian promises, the stern expression will quickly go away. Because that's right, Jun knows how seriously Varian takes promises. And they're something Jun took seriously as well... though now knowing the details of Varian's backstory, it's clear to see Varian's reason comes from a place from hurt.]

[He feels a little bad, wondering if he overreacted. But well, considering the damage done by Weissman getting Tsuchigomori's notes...]

... I really do trust you. It's why I was willing to share anything in the first place. [Even just SHOWING the Seal mark was a huge show of trust] But still, I know how much promises mean to you, so I truly appreciate it.

[He's never planning to ask Varian to promise him something again, he knows it means that much. ]

[Varian knows what it feels like to have someone go back on their word, even if it couldn't have been helped. He wouldn't put anyone else through that for anything. He doesn't even blame Jun for it- not for a second. That's a hell of a power, and after their conversation on the mountain, keeping him and his power from those who might try to weaponise it... weaponise him- it's very much better safe than sorry.

A smile tugs at his lips. If Jun can trust him after hearing an entire story about how he backstabbed an entire kingdom (twice) then he can take great comfort in that.]

Of course, it- you're worth protecting.

[He would appreciate that, they are carefully given, and he'd really rather not collect more. At Jun's question, he considers.]

I don't think it's so much... asking something of you, more... an assurance, I guess. I know that there's a lot you can't talk about, and that's not a problem at all. And I know you deal a lot of your stuff alone. But if you ever want company if you're, like, dealing with it? You can always come to me. Even if I'm working. [Which is generally how Varian deals with his own stuff, admittedly, neither of them are super great at the... talking out their problems thing.] I'll always ask if you wanna talk about it, but unless it's something that's really worrying, like the stuff with the Order, I won't press if you say 'no'.

[He shrugs his shoulders.]

But if you need someone to give you a distraction or talk to or just... sit quietly with, I can do that. I wanna be here for you, if you need me to.

[Jun had been sitting here, preparing to hear another request. A ground rule he can keep in mind and adhere to. It was only fair, considering the requests he was making of Varian.

Instead... Varian hits him with that. The full charm and reassurances. Being told that he's worth protecting. He stares at Varian like a deer in the headlights, stunned, and there's a definite blush on his face. He is charmed.]

[Varian was expecting maybe some sort of line about Jun being fine about dealing with stuff on his own while he brooded on some high ledge like an angsty cat. Instead, he gets that. He does notice the blush, but his hands still go up in a what the fuck??? gesture.]

Excuse me???

[Wow!! WOW?? This is what he gets for sincerity?! W O W!]

[His hands will also go up in a similar gesture at Varian's response]

What?! Do you not realize just how charming that sounded right now?! "You're worth protecting", "I wanna be here for you"--
