And this is unrelated to whatever the prophecy is talking about.
I think we'll need something that's more durable. Tanky. But I haven't built one in this life and I'm not sure I can do it myself.
So I'm asking you. How good are you with mechanical armor?
no subject
[He's always mad he never got to see the one that showed up in the palace. And then Blade says that and !!! SIR??? SIR?!!!!!]
Oh my god, yes?!!! Absolutely!!! I've done that before! Built mechanical armor, I mean. It was a piloted automaton, it was pretty big and almost indestructible! [Also he tried to kill a bunch of people with it but he's just not gonna...mention that one. Just yet.] I don't have access to what I need to make it THAT durable as that only existed back in my old world and it's gone from there now, too. But I can make it pretty dang strong. It should be able to take a hit from a dragon.
Ooooooh! We can attach SWORDS to it! I didn't have time to attach swords to my first one.
no subject
[He knows how big dragons can get, too. The memories are hazy but... yeah he's not taking any chances.]
A piloted automaton? Perfect. That's exactly what I want to make. Artificial intelligence isn't adequate yet, and we don't have the time to write a program of that complexity. It'll be easier just to have one of us in it. Probably me, since most things won't kill me.
[BLADE PLEASE]
You really know your stuff. I don't need to test you, you've delivered every time.
The dragon is earth elemental. I have the ability to imbue wind into things. I'm thinking I could help imbue the weapons, not just the sword but a shield too.
How big should we make this thing? I've got access to a lot of potential steel. We can make an alloy with iridium, I've made smaller pieces of armor with that. But we only have four weeks at most and I already have my hands full with the weapons, so I might need you to do more work on this. Consider it payback for the boat if you want. We could probably dip into funds for the weapons too if necessary, seeing as it's a weapon... just a piloted one.
[Oh god here they go.]

I'm not great with computers. I managed simplistic automatons once, but they weren't really intelligent. Just smashed up a lot, really. They weren't big, either. It'd be much smarter to have something piloted. It'd take out a lot of variables in a fight. And yeah...most things can kill me and I'd rather not.
[His dad would KILL him if he died!! He'd be grounded forever. ]
Oh that's cool! I'm an earth elemental, too, but I can't really embue anything. Wind is a good one though! I've been studying the fluctuations in our elemental powers and whenever earth elementals are weakened, wind are strengthened. That suggests earth would be weak against any extra wind abilities you can put into something.
[Why yes he IS prepped for what element might actually hurt him, thanks for asking!]
Hmmmm well, four weeks does make it a big tight. I probably couldn't make it as big as I wanted in that time. I could probably only hit about twenty feet with short notice- especially because we'd need time to test it and make sure it works. [ONLY twenty feet.] But yeah, that makes a lot of sense! We can work with this, absolutely. And agreed, it IS a weapon, and it's one that we're using to defend the city with- it TOTALLY counts.
[Here they fucking go!!!]

I'm good with computers. It's not my main focus, so what I can do is fairly specialized. I made a bot that can scout out resources, for example. It has preprogrammed responses to various stimuli, though it still needs to be manually driven like any drone.
You're not a little kid, but you are a bit young to be throwing your life around recklessly. If you get hurt, I don't want someone to drop in out of nowhere to kick my ass. I have regenerative powers, so don't worry about me.
[If Blade knew his dad was the santa guy he'd double down on this even more than he is because that guy is NUTS.]
Good to know I wasn't mistaken. That's what the books said, or close to it.
Twenty feet, then. It will be difficult, but not impossible for us. I'll see about the invoice I need to send.
Can you start tomorrow?
no subject
[OMPTIMISM!!]
Oh, I've thrown my life around recklessly more times than just now. I nearly died, like SO MANY times back home. But yeah, my dad would be pretty mad so I probably...shouldn't.
[He is so nuts. Varian loves him but he is so fucking nuts. ]
Yeah! It's totally doable! Man, I'm kinda excited. I haven't built one for so long. I'd like to see the perfections I can make on the last one.
Sure! I can drop by after school.
[The world might be in horrific danger but there's still SCHOOL!!!]
no subject
[The optimism is blinding.
... Maybe this kid really is old enough to watch Iron Blooded Orphans, holy shit.]
Dads hit harder than dragons. No thanks.
I look forward to working with you. Don't forget to bring your homework. I'll help you with it.
no subject
He would so watch it. He would watch the whole damn thing. ]
They really do, and my dad fought Santa.
[Just. Casually putting that there.]
Me too! And thanks! I really appreciate that.
no subject
Oh. That guy. Let's not get on his bad side.
[FJKDLSFKDJSLFJKLSDG]
No problem.
... I feel a little bad for complaining about how hard it is to get a job. Education is important. A strong understanding of the rules is needed to break them.
Do you have... college plans? You could get a scholarship with that brain of yours.
no subject
Aww, he's great, I don't think you have to worry about him.
[Yes. Yes you do.]
Yeah, I want to go to college, I've sat in a few college lectures already. The science programmes at high school don't really cut it, you know? It's just stuff like...history where I struggle.
[Because it's not really "history" when most of the things you learn there happen AFTER your time. ]
I've got POKEGO, too! That's exciting.
no subject
I'll take your word for it.
[HE AIN'T]
History isn't half as important as people say it is. You only need to take a couple semesters for an engineering degree. If you can get one that specifically ties into design, though, it's better.
POKEGO, huh. Dan Heng has told me about some of the things he's seen while with them. It's a good place for you.
[Blade is... too broken, and he would never want to intrude on what he feels is Dan Heng's safe place. But maybe in another life, a less cursed life, he'd pursue knowledge for its own sake again.]
Anyway, if you need help with getting into classes or scholarship applications, ask him. I don't remember the process but I can read over any essays they make you write.
no subject
That's really helpful to know, thank you. Having pointers means I might be able to actually figure this out by the time I need to apply.
[Which is looming EVER CLOSER. ]
I think so too! It's really given me a lot of opportunity to study. I think it'd be a good career, too. I like the idea of helping people out.
[Blade, please, don't be like this. ]
That'd be amazing. I really appreciate the both of you for helping me out. I have Elliot too, of course. But honestly, I need ALL the help I can get.
no subject
[HOW IS VARIAN ALMOST COLLEGE BOUND???]
Good.
[Too late, he's Like This.]
You aren't the first person from outside the US to attend college here, and you won't be the last. Ultimately, what matters is your attitude. ... And money, I guess. That's what scholarships are for.
no subject
[Time is fake, that's how.]
Hah, I have a feeling I might be one of the first ones to attend when I'm from 1820 though. Also a completely different world, I guess. But yeah! I can totally work on a scholarship. That's...definitely the better option.
[It's a lot of money and he doesn't want his dad to have to try and figure out THAT :(]
