[He's very impressed byt the cake. It's a SCIENCE CAKE!! How could he not be?

He opens his bag and lets out another excited little ooooh.]

Oh man, this is SO cool! It's got little gears on it and everything. Thank you, I love it.

[Fern grins as he watches Varian, happy that he's happy with the gift.]

I saw it and thought of you. There's all kinds of compartments, y'know, for science stuff. [What kind of science stuff? He doesn't know, he isn't a scientist.]

[He's absolutely delighted by it, he's definitely opening up and turning it this way and that to look at the aforementioned compartments.]

Wow, I can keep my chemical and substrate samples all separate and everything! This is way better than the one from home. Everything there just ended up at the bottom of the bag and I was always afraid of flasks smashing. This is perfect.

[Aww, Fern rubs the back of his head.]

Cool, glad you like it. A good backpack's super important when it comes to adventuring and junk.

[Varian grins, reaching to take Fern's hand, interlacing their fingers.]

Yeah! It really is. Hopefully, before long we'll be able to get out of here properly and have some real adventures. Maybe we can go into one of the stable gates for a trip together or something?

[Oh, Fern is squeezing Varian's hand immediately.]

That'd be fun. Maybe the pokemon one? That weird flower-bug that followed me out might like to see it again.

[He's more than happy to return that little hand squeeze.]

Sounds great. I've never really gone into there properly yet. It'll be fun to check it out- see all the weird little creatures in there.

Cool! Yeah, they kinda remind me of stuff back in Ooo. Some of 'em are even pretty dangerous.

[Does Fern want to fight a pokemon? Maybe.]

Yeah, I've seen some around, they seem real uh...fighty.

[Like someone else he knows. Who may or may not be right next to him. Holding his hand. Maybe. ]

Sounds like it'd be an adventure.

Right? It's pretty great!

[He loves not being the only fighty one around here, even if they're basically talking about fighty animals.]

Great, then it's a date. A... date adventure. A dateventure? Is that a thing?

[Sometimes, you've just gotta have a fight! Varian lets out a little chuckle.]

You know what, if it isn't, we can make it a thing.

Awesome! Then it's officially a thing. Our thing.

[He pauses at that for a second, thinking, then adds:]

Unless other people wanna make it a thing. It's a pretty cool idea, after all.

[Aww, Fern, his smile softens.]

Okay, I like that. It being our thing. And I guess we can loan it out to people if they really want it.

Ha ha, yeah! I don't mind doing that.

[He grins back, then goes to grab a knife and a plate.]

Sooo you wanna dig into the cake? It's chocolate.

[droptheious]

[He's gonna let Fern wield the knife- he knows what makes his boyfriend happy! He nods, excited to eat this delicious concoction. ]

Oh man, chocolate? You know how to get right to my heart!

Hah! Well, it's the best flavour.

[Fern looks absolutely thrilled to be cutting something, even if that something is just a slice of cake.

It's a great slice though, a perfect triangle that he dumps onto the plate and hands Varian, along with a fork.]

It sure is! They perfected it when they found the cocoa plant.

[He's so amused, he knew Fern would get a kick out of it. He'll take the plate. smiling at the perfectly sliced cake. ]

You're really good at the cutting thing.

[Look, he'll give his boyfriend a boost too! He takes a bite, making a soft mmmm sound.]

It's good!

[He nods vehemently in agreement, and at the compliment looks a little embarrassed.]

C'mon, it's just a cake.

[.................. He is also kind of proud of that cake slice though, so his argument is half-hearted at best.]

Yeah? Cool. I couldn't taste test or anything, so....

It's not just a cake. It's a delicious cake that looks super cool.

[He swallows his cake mostly so he can oh-so-maturely stick his tongue out at his boyfriend.]

It's really good! You never would have guessed you couldn't taste any of the ingredients.

[Fern blushes a little. He isn't used to his cooking being complimented.]

Yeah? Thank Glob for that. I dunno what I'd do if I couldn't even make a chocolate cake.

[He'd better get used to it, Varian will compliment him every time he tries it!]

Well, good for you, you're actually great at it. Something for you to know for the future!

[It's ok, after a moment of hesitation Fern will roll with it.]

Hah, yeah. If I ever tired of being the sword guy I can become the cake guy.

[Varian makes an amused sound, leaning in to kiss his cheek.]

You can always be the sword AND cake guy, you know.

[Pfft, he laughs a little at that.]

Wouldn't that be kinda weird? They're total opposites.

[He smiles softly.]

Why would it be weird? You're allowed to have other interests, you know, even when they're totally separate things.
