getting chased by a raccoon was... definitely not what he expected. it's fine. luckily, expelling his 'gift' from his closet space was easy enough so he could leave as soon as possible. and maybe remind himself to check for dogs with the other houses he has to visit...
He'll shoot varian a text back some time later. ]
I made you a promise of no more cubes, right? I might be a funny guy, but I'm a man of my word! Sampo Koski has never broken a promise.
[Sometimes you get attacked by a raccoon when you break into someone's room to leave an insane number of rubber ducks and partly cursed candy. Sometimes that happens!! ]
Hah, thank you. I don't know what I'm going to do with all these ducks yet, but I guess it'll be fun to find out. And... good. Promises are important to keep.
[ Stupid as the cube thing is, the fact Sampo has kept his word has raised him extremely high in Varian's opinions. Kept promises are one of the most important things to the alchemist- he will remember Sampo is someone he can trust to keep them when he makes them. ]
Good. I'm really glad to hear that. It's about time something decent happened in all the crazy in this place.
In a past life I was a member of a group called the Masked Fools, I think. I don't have a lot of memories on it--they're fuzzy and scattered at best! But if there's one thing that stands out its that the Masked Fools weren't really trustworthy people.
I'm a trickster and a bit of a thief, I won't lie! But never once did I ever break a promise, to my memory. I'll bring it up to the guy later, so don't fret too much if he still teases about it, I'll get in his way in the best ways I know how. Like stealing his four phones and stuff. ...Five phones, I think he has five.
And tell me about it! That's the last time I touch weird stuff at that goodwill. Without making the creepy guy behind the counter touch them first, that is.
Hah, no kidding. So like... a circus troupe? It kinda sounds like that. Those passed through Corona sometimes!
[Ah. But the promise. The little "..." type back and forth as Varian tries to think how he wants to address this. The comfort he had being immediately replaced with worry.]
I'd rather he didn't. Someone once broke a promise to me and it made me almost destroy my whole life. It's left me with pain I'm never going to get over. It's not a joke to me. A promise is either binding or it's not. There's no in-between. I can't... let there be an in-between.
[ He can't give leeway to a broken promise. Not ever. Of everything he's worked through in therapy, it's the one trauma that stays tight and painful in his chest, a deep, nasty wound that can't ever heal. It's part of the reason it takes a lot for him to trust anyone. To let people peek in to who he is behind all the nerdy science and helpful attitude. ]
Yeah. I'd say if the goodwill guy won't touch it, it's probably not safe to touch at all!

I'm feeling... good.
Yeah.
