[For the first part of the month, Varian had done what was asked of him and he stayed put. He'd done it once before when Zodiac was on his back, but it didn't mean he liked it any. Now the threat is gone, he's glad to have his freedom back without having to worry about the threat of another shady group.

He's been giving Rose some space. He's glad their houseguest has somewhere to recuperate, but he's never been so good at the people thing and doesn't know the first way to comfort her after going through something so horrific. He's been on both sides of a kidnapping in his life, but it pales to what Krusnik did. He's a little lost how to help her.

But she finds him anyway, and he smiles, raising his hand awkwardly in greeting. ]

Hi. Yep- yep, that's me. Varian. Hi...again. You're Rose, right?

[Any kidnapping is a bad kidnapping! And any interaction Rose has right now is bound to be awkward, especially considering that Varian has probably seen her crying multiple times already.]

[But still, she'll try her best. She matches his awkward hand raise.]

That would be correct. I'm sure your father told you some of why I was here.

[Because she doesn't want to have that conversation again, and she imagines that Amal is the type of person to not keep information secret from his children. The type to teach them to pick locks, maybe.]

I wanted to thank you. For opening your home to me.

[Varian at least, doesn't judge her for the crying. He had some pretty emotional people in his old world and it's not all that different here. You gotta have that emotional health! ]

...Yeah. I already knew about Krusnik. I'm friends with Jun, I found out about them from him. They were...pretty awful. I'm sorry about what happened to you.

[But at least he had a place to BE safe. He's fairly certain Amal would tear the world apart to keep him safe. Also lockpicking. ]

I mean, it would've been wrong not to. [He gives a shrug like it's not a big deal.] You needed help, and we've got to look out for each other here. I'm glad we were able to-to give you a safe place to stay.

[The smile she gives him is genuine. She certainly wasn't so aware at his age. Of course, it's no wonder, considering who his father is. Amal may pretend otherwise, but he does have a kind heart. One that's been hurt, time and time again, but one that is kind nonetheless.]

[Not that she'd ever, ever say that to him.]

You seem very happy here. I'm glad.

[Ah. He frowns lightly, shifting from foot to foot, hugging an arm around himself in an attempt of self-comfort.]

I'm...not. But thanks. I'm. Working on that. Being a better person.

[Turns out there's a lot of reasons he and Amal clicked as a family. They have a certain...understanding of each other there.

Still, he does smile.]

Yeah! I really am! I've got a great home here. No complaints! [He offers her a smile.] I uh- I hope you've been happy here, too? Like. Got everything you need?

Sometimes that's all it takes. The will to work to be better.

[She's not actually sure who it is that she's saying those words to, but she has a hunch that it might not be Varian.]

It has been truly wonderful. When I arrived here, I had nothing but a small apartment. There are certain luxuries that I'd missed.

Hah...yeah. I keep hearing that. I'm working on learning to believe that too.

[He's working on it! Therapy is helping a lot in that respect. Baby steps!]

The Zodiac ones? That's where I was before all the uh...peach stuff. [You know. Just. The peach stuff.] It's a nice place here, after there. Lots of room. I um... I hope it's helping you a little? Having some space to decompress.
