Haha, It's nothing bad for once.

My friend is staying in a place that doesn't have electricity. He insist he's fine but I'm still a little worried. So I was wondering if you could make him some kind of power generator.

I guess I don't blame her. Maybe sometimes you just expect to be treated like royalty. And is the other like a...basilisk? Or...uh are they called wyverns? I'm not really great with dragon types, we only have one sort back home and they're SUPER rare. I've never seen one myself.

I'm okay. Fern just needs to be able to get his nutrients from the sun and earth- but so long as he can just go...stand in the garden for a little bit a day, he should be fine. I have to do the sun thing, too, earth abilities and...all that.

Wow yeah. I mean, I come from a time before electricity, so I know how to survive without it- but you FOR SURE can't do it in this time period. Everything's built around having it.

[He's pretty sure no one has oil lamps here.]

But yeah, no problem. I can put something together for him. It'll give me something to do and stop be from wanting to crawl the walls.

[The inaction after so much hard work is killing him. He'll have to check with Amal if he can do this inside or out, but this, he can do!]

Thanks Varian. He lives next to a large garden full of sensitive plants, so please nothing that might damage those.

Right. Does he have any heating? It's still pretty chilly and without any power, it's gonna be cold at night.

I try to avoid anything that'd be too damaging to plants anyway these days. Between Fern and my own earth elemental powers, I try not to risk it.

Trust me, I might be done before then. I need something to keep my mind off everything else. I feel better when I can do something with my hands.

i'm so glad my curry didn't scare you off. i know how much spicy stuff can kill a man. not everyone seeks it out the way i do haha

there's a story behind that. for a long time it was just me and dansara on the road... we'd sleep in stables together because i couldn't afford a bed, or there wasn't one at all. but i was never cold because she always sheltered me with her wings like i was her baby. when i drank too much she'd keep me from getting in trouble. when i was despairing she'd nudge me to keep going

that's why i treat her like a queen

i'm not sure what it's called. it's cuter than the usual dragons. not that dragons aren't cute, but this one is like adorable-cute. it's got big beautiful eyes and a really round nose like a puppy or something

oh yes that shouldn't be a problem. i just don't want to attract undue attention you know? no running around screaming in the woods behind the house because the neighbors will definitely call somebody

That's actually...kinda nice. I'm glad that you had someone with you. I always had Ruddiger with me. He even stuck with me when I went to prison. [Just gonna. Not linger on that.] I can see why you'd want to treat her like that. It's...I don't know, it's comforting to know you have someone like that who's always looking after you, regardless of if they're an animal or not.

[On the morning of Varian's birthday, there is a suspiciously staff-like shape wrapped in shiny gold and teal wrapping paper leaning against the dining table. Inside the wrap is a quarterstaff. There's also a card next to the cake on the table, and it reads in crude handwriting:]

Happy nameday to the best scientist I know!
I know you're not the fighting type, but as they say: speak softly, and carry a big stick.
The smith told me it's enchanted to help focus the power of earth. Also to never break it in half. Not sure what that's about.
I can give you some basic lessons outside whenever you feel up to it.

[Whenever the first chance to safely hand over a package is, Varian will find a book and a small pouch.]

[Varian's birthday has never really been a Thing- big or otherwise. His dad always wished him a happy birthday and gave him a present of course, but then he was off in the fields, or managing the villagers or doing any other number of things his job required. His birthday is always such a non-event.

So he's surprised to find the gift and cake. He opens it up, and lets out a soft oooooh to himself as he tests the weight of the staff in his hand. He had one once before, but the guards took it away from him when he went into prison and he never got it back. He opens up the card and reads it over, and oh...that means a lot.

He's absolutely getting a huge slab of cake as he sits down to type a message to Amal's phone. ]

Hi Amal. Thank you so much for the present and the cake! That's really cool of you to get me something. I had a staff back home, a couple years ago but I could probably use a few lessons in using one properly.

Thanks again, this really means a lot. No promises on the cake.

[Oh well, that's a welcome gift indeed! Varian's going to send a message because this is honestly wild to him. He's not used to getting multiple birthday gifts.]

[Amal is out running errands, but he makes time to text his sonthing back. He's relieved that Varian found it to be a good gift, since Amal knows he's not the best at selecting presents... The majority of things he gets for other people is stuff he thinks he'd appreciate himself. Weapons, nice wine, nice jewelry... that sort of thing. He's not much of a staff user though, so this one was a bit risky!]

[Soooo there's been a whole heck of a lot going on for the last couple of weeks, but Fern isn't about to let that stop him from trying to do something nice for his boyfriend's birthday. Varian could really use it, even if it's a temporary distraction from Zodiac and all the guilt that's been weighing on him. He knows from personal experience how hard that is.

He's commandeered Amal's kitchen and has been doing his damnedest, and after a couple of hours he's knocking on his and Varian's bedroom door before poking his head in.]

Heyyyy V, you busy?

It will! I've always been curious how far farming has gone since my time- maybe I can learn about new crop rotations, stuff like that! And I love the tools, this can fit right into my pocket so I never have to worry about being without tools again.

[He doesn't feel like he's EARNED gifts this time around, much less from Danny, but he appreciates it so much. It makes him hope that things might eventually be normal again. ]

[Varian would very much tell Amal he's EXCELLENT at giving gifts. He's missed having a staff. He always thought it make him look cool as hell. ]

Yeah! I used to hang a bunch of my alchemy on it, it was really cool.

...You really think I have?

[Because that's so important to him. He's felt like a colossal fuckup for a while, so hearing he's improved to someone, anyone, means EVERYTHING.]

[There's been SO MUCH. Varian's still not feeling super, but the general support he had when he made his announcement has helped a little. He doesn't feel he deserves people standing by him, but it's what he's getting and he's slowly starting to accept that maybe he's not a complete and utter fuckup.

He looks up from whatever book he's been reading- largely avoiding his phone in case Zodiac try to track him. He flashes Fern a smile as he comes in. ]

Hey, you. Nope, not busy at all.

[Fern steps into the bedroom, happy to hear that.]

Great, then - [It means he can step right on over to Varian and scoop him up into his arms, then spin him around.] - happy birthday!

[Birthday gifts and friendships didn't need to be earned. Some day Danny would figure out how to convince Varian of that too.]

I know for sure that a lot of the technology has changed.

[Danny had remembered when they'd talked about this before.]

Yeah, I'm getting one of these too soon as I can find one made of something other than steel. No harm in trying to be a little more prepared next time, right?

[Those two weeks had made an impression on Danny.]
