[He's so amused, he knew Fern would get a kick out of it. He'll take the plate. smiling at the perfectly sliced cake. ]

You're really good at the cutting thing.

[Look, he'll give his boyfriend a boost too! He takes a bite, making a soft mmmm sound.]

Until I figure out how to make an unbreakable lock, anyway.

[Is that something he can do? Is he just bluffing? It can be something Amal can ponder on. Fun times. Still, he really is just joking. He likes being around Amal, too and having an actual home attached to a workplace, family and all is such a comforting thought.

He wasn't expecting the little spin, and a surprised laugh bubbles out of him. He's definitely not letting go of that hug yet.]

Why wouldn't I? You've- you've always had my back, even when I was super in the wrong.

[Which has been a LOT, admittedly!

And wow, those are a lot of promises all at once- and while it does give Varian a slightly nervous twinge, this time he knows he can put full faith that Amal will keep them. It's a big step for him, trusting a promise without a warning to keep it or without huge reservations. It speaks volumes about how much Varian really trusts the man. ]

I know you will. I trust you. And I'll...uh try to listen to that guidance and make you proud. Y'know try to...not make you regret this. [His tone is a little joking but he also means it because obviously this is an equal exchange thing and he needs to prove Amal's not making a mistake. He does give a little smile at the nickname. That makes him feel all kinds of fuzzy. ] ...Chingari [he absolutely is not pronouncing that right] hah that's...I like that.

[He nods vehemently in agreement, and at the compliment looks a little embarrassed.]

C'mon, it's just a cake.

[.................. He is also kind of proud of that cake slice though, so his argument is half-hearted at best.]

Yeah? Cool. I couldn't taste test or anything, so....

It's not just a cake. It's a delicious cake that looks super cool.

[He swallows his cake mostly so he can oh-so-maturely stick his tongue out at his boyfriend.]

It's really good! You never would have guessed you couldn't taste any of the ingredients.

[Fern blushes a little. He isn't used to his cooking being complimented.]

Yeah? Thank Glob for that. I dunno what I'd do if I couldn't even make a chocolate cake.

[He'd better get used to it, Varian will compliment him every time he tries it!]

Well, good for you, you're actually great at it. Something for you to know for the future!

[It's ok, after a moment of hesitation Fern will roll with it.]

Hah, yeah. If I ever tired of being the sword guy I can become the cake guy.

[Varian makes an amused sound, leaning in to kiss his cheek.]

You can always be the sword AND cake guy, you know.

[Pfft, he laughs a little at that.]

Wouldn't that be kinda weird? They're total opposites.

[He smiles softly.]

Why would it be weird? You're allowed to have other interests, you know, even when they're totally separate things.

I dunno. It just seems.... [He trails off, shrugging.]

My whole thing is 'emotionally volatile stabby grass boy.' [Thank you, Finn, for some of that.] Cake doesn't really fit.

[Varian reaches out to take Fern's hand in his own- gently rubbing a thumb over the grass there.]

Okay. So think about it this way. Do you think there's more to me than just "the science boy who keeps messing up'?

[Fern looks down at their hands, his own squeezing Varian, before glancing up at him.]

Thaaaat totally isn't fair, dude. You know I'm gonna say yes and that I'll argue with you forever about it.

[droptheious]

[He returns the hand squeeze, flashing his boyfriend a very smug grin. ]

All's fair in love and war. Anyway, my point stands. I can be more than one thing. so can you.

[laminae]

[Pfft, he rolls his eyes exaggeratedly.]

Okay, maybe. [He can give him that much, at least.]

So... cakes and swords aside, what do you wanna do for your birthday?

[droptheious]

Hmmm. [He rubs the back of his neck with this free hand.] I don't know. I can't really go very far so it's not like I can...go somewhere. Not while we don't know what's happening with Zodiac.

[He sounds guilty about that- he's got Fern stuck on the run with him and he didn't even get his boyfriend involved in the whole thing beforehand. It feels...unfair.]

Maybe we can watch some movies? I know I got a lot to catch up on.

[Varian is right, though it only causes Fern to make a mental note to make sure he takes his boyfriend on some kind of belated birthday outing when everything is settled. If it gets settled.

He nods at the suggestion.]

Then we'll have a whole marathon of whatever movies you wanna watch! We can even see if they got some microwave popcorn in one of the cupboards.

[He waves a hand, pretty sure no one in the house would object to the two of them stealing popcorn for birthday purposes.]

[He will really appreciate a nice treat after all this madness is over. He's so tired of being cooped up. It's still not as bad as being in literal prison for his birthday, but it's not like he can go about freely right now, either. It's just for...different reasons this time. ]

Sounds like a great time, I'm sure there's plenty of snacks for us to rifle through.

[He's pretty sure it'll be fine too. After all, Amal invited two teenage boys in here, he had to know that ran risks of having food devoured. Or...you know, one of them devouring, anyway.]

[Fern nods and starts going through the cupboards, not taking long to find a few bags of microwaveable popcorn. Grabbing one, he tosses it in the microwave.]

Sick! This'll be the best movie marathon ever!

[He might not be able to eat the popcorn, but the smell is still amazing, so once it's done and he's retrieved a bowl they can head to the living room.]

[The smell IS pretty dang amazing and Varian is more than happy to let Fern bask in the delicious popcorn-y smell as long as he wants. Once they get into the living room, he sits down, pulling his feet up so he can cuddle up close to Fern. Because his boyfriend is comfy and he feels maybe he can be allowed to give him a cuddle on his birthday. As a treat. He coils an arm around Fern's middle.]

So. What should we watch first?

[It's pretty awesome, as is the cuddling. Fern is happy to snuggle right in next to Varian, holding the popcorn bowl between them. A couple flowers are even springing up in his hair.]

It's your birthday, you get to pick.

[He'll grab the remote and hand it over.]

[The cuddling is very awesome, and the flowers make Varian's heart flutter a little as a chuckle bubbles out of him.]

Okay, okay. My pick. But you can't blame me if I pick something weird. [He starts flicking through the channels.] Ooh what about The Shining? That sounds like it could be fun.

[He has NO idea.]

[Sadly, Fern doesn't either. He has no clue what the movie could be about - the title sounds like something for kids, but it looks like it's for adults? Weird, but whatever. It seems interesting enough!]

Sure, sounds good.

[droptheious]

[You know, for a while, everything seemed pretty okay with the movie. In fact, it seemed pretty dull. Just...some family spending time in a hotel and looking after it. It's not exactly the thrilling adventure he'd been hoping for. Even the talk about magical powers isn't really that exciting.

He's about to tell Fern that maybe this was a bad choice in movies when suddenly creepy fucking ghost twins show up and then there's a lot of blood and bodies and Varian clings a little tighter to Fern. God, why did it have to be blood? ]

Uhhhh. This- this took a turn.

[Amal still can't seem to win against electronic locks, so Varian has that on him, at least. But it is a very credible threat regardless.]

Of course I... [He smiles halfway.] I'm not easy to drive away. I hope you've figured that out, and if you haven't, you will soon! It's kind of my thing—I don't give up on people. Not ever.

[Amal knows he'll let Varian down at some point or another because he isn't perfect, but that's not the same as abandoning someone utterly. He's never done this parenting thing before. He's never even really had a proper parent. But when it comes to being stubborn, saving people despite all odds, and loving with his whole heart... there are few who can match him in that.

'I trust you.' That's all he needs to hear. That's what seals the promise.]

If I regret anything, it's not taking you in sooner. [And just to prove it he goes in for another hug.] I was just... so afraid of messing everything up. I still am. But we—we can figure it out together. That's what family does.

[He rubs at Varian's back.]

That's a relief. I couldn't come up with a flower that fit you. [LMAO] But it's more than that. I think... you're a light in the dark for more than just me. And you'll continue to do that as you grow and learn and invent all sorts of things that make our lives better.
