Probably not. I mean, Zodiac as a company hasn't exactly been great since we got here. But...I don't know.

It feels weird now. I don't really know how to deal with it now I'm putting names and faces to the people who work for them.

[They're not anonymous peons anymore. They're Real People and it's starting to hit different. ]

I think we've been hating a whole bunch of people when it's only the ones at the top who are the real enemy here. And I think so, yeah. They've got homes and families to provide for. They're just trying to do that. It feels wrong to hate them for that.

[Danny wasn't sure if he'd believed in destiny before this. But the idea of some future version of yourself coming back to make your life follow the same path. Well, he'd had more than a few nightmares about that.

Also apparently there was a ghost who controlled time. Only marginally less terrifying, solely because it seemed like he'd taken a liking to his other self.]

Yeah, I.... Is it strange to say that that makes it worse in some ways? Even if was the exact same future I'd know what to watch for. But I have no idea what the trigger could be now.

[Apart from being left alone. But the reason for that, it could be anything. An accident, an attack. And maybe Danny had developed quite a lot of anxiety and an urge to constantly check up on his friends because of that. But it was probably fine. Maybe it was even useful paranoia, considering everything that had happened.]

They really wouldn't take it well if I did it that way. I'll figure something out. I hope.

...Yeah I guess that's true. But again, I don't think it's your destiny. I think being in a different world, a different you changes that.

[He's going to steadfastly refuse to believe in destiny, so there!!!]

[Danny only wished he could be that confident about this.]

[He draws himself back onto the bench. Normally at a time like this he would try to distract himself. Make a dumb joke. Go and play video games or stargaze or anything not to think about everything that was and could go wrong.

But right now he honest just didn't have the energy for it. He was just tired.]

[Varian watching Danny draw into himself, his brow furrowed. He hates seeing Danny like this. So withdrawn, so quiet. He wants to be able to pull his friend out of this funk, to give him some sort of assurance - but what can you do to make this any better? It's just gonna...dangle over his head, no matter how much Varian can assure him that he'll remain.

He can't make this better, but maybe he can make it bearable.

He reaches out to put a hand on Danny's shoulder, offering a small smile. ]

Hey. You look pretty beat, you wanna stay over at mine and Fern's tonight? We've still got that spare room. You can just...take some time for yourself.

[Danny contemplates going home for a long moment.

He could go home. He could. His parents tried, at least. That mattered. Even if they didn't really understand him any more. And it was beginning to feel less and less like home.

But as he thinks about it, he can't help but dread the idea of spending another night alone with this thoughts, while not being able to say a word about it.]

...I'd appreciate that. You sure I won't be a bother?

Of course, you won't be a bother. We've got more than enough space for you to come and lounge around if you need it.

[His smile is small, but sincere. He didn't really want to talk about his issues with his parents (and the issue with the memories he's had with his other parents. But... the chance to put it off for even a night. It helped.]

i don't know how to say this in a way that doesn't sound alarming so i'm just gonna come out and say it

zodiac is acting really strange and we're worried they might do something to the building people are living in. there's no evidence of that but they're just acting really off and i feel like the further away you are from their influence the better

do you... want to stay with me until we know what's going on?

i have an extra room as long as you don't mind sharing with fern. there's always the daybed too, you'll just have to work that out between you two

i have a couple house rules i'll lay down if you take me up on this but nothing too oppressive i promise

[Varian's been living in a state of heightened stress for the last few months- since he found out what Zodiac were planning and his subsequent plans in how to throw a spanner into the works. He very almost drops his phone when the text comes through.

He reads it a couple of times over and his uneasiness doesn't really abate. He's not sure if anything WOULD happen to the people in the apartments- especially after what he has planned. He can't discount them acting in retaliation against him for that. Getting Fern out of the building would be...something. He's still fully expecting to have to get the hell out of dodge, himself. But if he can do something to protect his loved ones then that will be SOMETHING.

He checks with Fern first, of course. Fern doesn't know what he's doing either, and that's for the best. Maybe between the both of them Amal and Fern can be SAFE. ]

Yeah. They're acting super weird lately.

[He knows why he knows why and he's lying to the people he loves about it. It's making him feel sick in his stomach. Up until now, he never understood why his father hid his knowledge of the Dark Kingdom from him, but now he gets it. Sometimes, it's the only thing you can do.

The further away you are from their influence the better - he's glad this is over text- so Amal can't hear the panicked noise that gurgles out of his throat. Oh dear father figure, you have NO idea. ]

Thanks, Amal. That'd actually be...a really good idea. I checked if Fern and he's okay with it, too. It's probably better than sleeping in a place they control completely, right?

[It's probably suspicious that he's not even asking about what house rules there are right off the bat. ]

[Amal has no fucking idea what's going on behind the scenes. He tends to be pretty hands off when it comes to supervising those he's chosen under his care, giving them the space they need and only swooping in when necessary. But this time, he feels it is necessary to stay close. Everyone is on high alert.]

that's right. if things get crazy, i want my friends to be close to me so i can protect you

[Maybe Varian and Fern will actually be able to sleep...? Amal doesn't have the best track record with protecting his friends, but in his defense, it's because his friends usually try to protect him. Less likely here, and now.

It's definitely a bit weird that Varian doesn't ask about the rules right away. To Amal, this reads as Varian being terrified. He's not sure what exactly would cause that but... maybe he's just super worked up about the apartment thing?]

hey. i won't let anything happen to you, all right? i promise. so don't worry too much right now and instead think about all the good food you're going to eat over here

1. no experiments in the house
2. no swinging weapons in the house either
3. the giant bird in the backyard is lady dansara. if she knocks on your window, open it and give her pets and an apple. she understands common so if you tell her no she'll leave
4. there's a small dragon in the barn too, ask raha before you play with him
5. knock and ask for permission before entering anyone's room
6. try to be quiet between 11pm and 6am (less of a rule and more of a reminder for me since i work nights)

does that all sound good?

[He reads those rules, and honestly he has...so many questions.]

Got it. No danger in the house. Steer clear of the giant bird and the dragon. And don't worry, I think I could sleep on a whole pile of rocks, there won't be any trouble there- and we won't bother anyone else.

the giant bird is friendly i promise, she just likes to be treated like a queen. there's another dragon too actually that's more like a snake? that one belongs to ghaleon, just don't bother that one if you can help it since it might get touchy.
