[As much as a part of his brain is making him want to snap at her for reasons he can't understand, he fights it. As much as he can. He offers a strained smile. ]

I need to know if anyone else is dealing with this too. Do...do you think you could find out? I can try and work on a cure, but I really do need to know how widespread this is.

Yeah, I'll be okay. I'm...pretty used to working alone. I can get a head start on this and hopefully figure out how to help people. I...I doubt it's just Fern that's affected.

[ "used to" is not the same as "I like it". so she's not entirely convinced, but she can't see a reason to push it. sometimes people are like that.
