CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THROUGH TO RUDDIGER. PLEASE LEAVE FOOD AT THE END OF THE BEEP. MESSAGES CANNOT BE GUARANTEED DELIVERY IF FOOD IS NOT PROVIDED. [VIDEO | AUDIO | TEXT]
Do you have experience with building or studying portals? Specifically ones that could be used to travel back and forth to other universes or dimensions, if calculated and constructed properly.
I do have experience with those, yeah. I managed to construct one back home that worked. Though word of warning, one here won't work. I managed to make a few to try and bust out of the dream and it ended...really badly. Like, nearly destroyed the world badly.
Was it from attempting to send a person or object through it that caused it to malfunction? Or did everything start falling apart from the start when just turning it on?
It was twofold. We relied on the help of a demon to get it powered up and moving- turns out he was in it for himself and doublecrossed us at the last minute.
But also... we had to build a few portals- the dream had multiple layers, and we needed a portal for each to get through to the centre. But there were guardians for these layers- trying to protect them from breaking. Once they realised what was happening, they kinda...snapped and all hell broke loose. A lot of people died or got badly injured as the dream started to collapse in on itself. We shut it down and that was that.
Hmm... in that case, perhaps it would be different attempting to build one here since this world is supposed to be "real" and not just a dream, right? There might not be as many layers between us and other universes.
... Though, rather than sending people through immediately, I will concede that even if one was successfully built, it would be best to simply do something benign like an object or even a message to transmit... and uh, not working together with demons on it, probably?
I don't know, maybe. I'm a little hesitant to do that again. Just in case.
[He really doesn't want to accidentally almost end the world again- once is enough!]
Though... finding a way to transmit a message might not be a terrible idea. And yeah let's...not include any demons this time. Who do you want to send a message to?
[There's a pause, before Zib has an answer he feels capable of providing since Varian might not find it too weird in comparison to other things he's said lately.]
An alternate version of myself--another Dib that I met because of the portal I had invented back home.
He was... though, the last thing I remember before ending up here was that he was about to be pulled back into his own reality, so I don't know if that is still the case or not.
That, and I had promised to help him with defeating the Zim that was in their universe. I was going to tell him how to access the means to do it that I had used for the one on my Earth.
I made the mistake of talking about the plan in front of his Zim, who then messed around with time and space and made it so that some of his experiences were passed on to all the Zims that exist across the multiverse.
... But! I can attempt to tap back further in the timeline to tell my alternate self what to do before his Zim tries to do this, then it might work out better.
Oh wow, so this is less...portals and more time travel? I definitely haven't managed to deal with time travel yet. That was a wholly magical thing back home. And dangerous. Messing with the timelines more might make things even worse.
You'd think that, but... for whatever reason, my reality seems to just throw it's hands up in the air and say "sure, why not" when you attempt to do anything with the timeline.
Going back like an hour is probably far easier to accomplish in comparison to... whatever Zim did to make it that every single iteration of him in every single reality has the same memory of something that should have happened in only one universe.
No, not yet. I was just told that you and someone named "Stanford Pines" would be the best people to ask about building portals, so I didn't consider asking Fern for his thoughts on this.
[Ah. He wonders if Fern's alternate is someone he hates... or if they've done something to hurt them. If so, he can relate to that given what actually happened when Zib met his own alternate...]
Okay. I'll ask him, if he doesn't mind telling me about it.
[Definitely like THAT- which is mostly why Varian doesn't want to talk about it if Fern doesn't. It's not his story to tell. But he hopes having someone ELSE with this kind of experience to talk to will mean they can help one another out with it. ]
Yeah, it might do you both some good to talk about it. It's not something I have experience in to help with.
In the meantime though, I do appreciate the response you've given me about your experience with portals. It's given me something to think about going forward with this.

I need advice on something, and I've been told that you are one of the people I should ask about this particular thing.

Oh okay. I don't know how well it would connect to alternate worlds unless he's...in your home world?

Have you ever talked to Fern about this? He'd... well, he'd relate. And I guess an HOUR wouldn't be too dramatic.

Though I actually meant talking to him about the...multiple selves thing.
