CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THROUGH TO RUDDIGER. PLEASE LEAVE FOOD AT THE END OF THE BEEP. MESSAGES CANNOT BE GUARANTEED DELIVERY IF FOOD IS NOT PROVIDED. [VIDEO | AUDIO | TEXT]
[Oh well, he wasn't expecting this. Varian turns on the feed and he still looks just as exhausted as he did before. He's got bags under his eyes that he can take on vacation. His skin is starting to turn a strange, ashen colour, too. That's totally healthy, right? ]
Yup! The anxiety has now evolved into this weird paranoia and it's like something's watching me all the time and I hate it. It's the worst.
[Force alive, why did his nephew let himself get to this point? That's it. His tone is bossy and with no chance for argument when he speaks.]
Well, you look absolutely terrible and I've had it. Fern seems to have gotten to a point where he isn't going to attack me on sight, so I'm coming over to help get you to sleep.
[Varian's already too tired to fight this. Fern's already told him about what happened between him and Maul, where he stands with the other man. He knows this won't result in some sort of fight. So he exhales sharply, rubbing his face.]
Okay, sure. I'm willing to try anything at this point.
[In an attempt to behave, he'll even use the front door instead of sneaking in through one of the windows. He looks around for Varian, and once finding him, puts a hand on the back of his neck to gently steer him.]
[Maul using the door like a normal person has earned him some serious brownie points, and a small, tired smile tugs at Varian's lips to see him do it. He really doesn't look any better in person, there's a haggard aspect to his appearance and that ashen skin looks like it's flaking in places- with burned, black skin underneath. Varian definitely isn't doing great at all.]
...Yeah, okay. Thank you.
[The fact he provides absolutely no resistance probably isn't a great sign, either. He heads up the stairs- figuring bed would be the best place to do this. He doesn't turn at the first door on the top of the stairs, where his room has been since he got to Deerington- instead he moves to the room that was Fern's, now their's. Maybe if he wasn't running on fumes, he'd make a comment on it, instead he just plods to the bed, sitting heavily on the edge of it. ]
[The fact Varian is now apparently in Fern's room is something that Maul definitely would have been commenting on if they already didn't have a much more pressing issue to deal with right now in the form of Varian's insomnia. His skin looks unnatural and Maul makes a note to look into what might be going on after he's done here.]
I'm going to go into your mind and use the Dark Side to help put it in the right frame of mind to be able to accept the idea of sleep. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Just try to relax. This isn't going to hurt.
[Maul brings his clawed hands up around Varian's temples, letting them hover there in the air. He brings up the Dark Side that is always swirling around him, letting himself relax and get in the proper state of mind to be able to use it. He lets the Force flow through him, using him more as a conduit for the energy instead of simply bending it to his will. When he feels the power thrumming from his horns all the way down through his organic half, he enters Varian's mind.
As he expected, Varian's mind is much more chaotic than Usagi's was when he did this before. There's about fifty-seven thoughts all zinging around at once and there's a sense of sharpness to them, like he could get cut if he tries to forcibly stop them. So he doesn't. He lets himself grow acclimated to the landscape, lets himself become part of it, watching the way the flow of thoughts go, how some become focused on while others take a sharp left or right turn, and other still just seem to dissipate back into the subconscious.
Once he's got a good measure for how fast everything is going, he summons the Dark Side. While Maul himself has often used it for evil purposes, darkness at its core is not evil. After all, don't people sleep in the dark? Rather than putting up any hard walls or other solid measures, he lets it seep in the same way fog will creep across a landscape or the way the sky will be taken over by the blue-blackness of night as the light is leeched away. He lets a large measure of it in and then sets it among Varian's many chaotic thoughts. While they don't immediately freeze or stop in their tracks, the loud sound of them begins to be turned down and they begin to slow their pace just a little bit. He's basically slowly turning down the volume on Varian's mind in a slow, steady manner.]
[That can be a fun conversation for them later. Varian's not the best at relaxing, but he's aware it's that fact that has not helped him with his ever-increasing insomnia. It's perhaps a testament to the fact he's trusting Maul again that he does, indeed close his eyes and try his best to do as he's asked.
He's not sure what to expect, and his mind really is a broken, chaotic mess at the best of times- and this certainly isn't the best of times. Those sharp thoughts fight, just for a moment, as the Dark Side seeps in, like a fish thrashing around after being pulled onto land. Eventually, though, they begin to settle, they stop thrashing out against the force trying to calm them.
The boy those thoughts are attached to starts to relax too- his breathing starting to deepen as the sheer exhaustion that he's been dealing with for the past month finally gets a foothold against his chaotic thoughts. He isn't slow in starting to doze off- his head slumping forward against Maul's shoulder. ]
[Maul goes about his work with a calm, steady hand. When he's in a spiritual, meditative state like this his patience is near infinite, unlike his usual hot-headed conscious state, and so he gets Varian's mind in order for a deep sleep. He gets the thoughts to flow in a more clear path. They don't stop in how many there are but he forms a clear path between them and the subconsciousness, letting them spend less time at the forefront of Varian's mind and to go back after they're done passing through. It's organized chaos at its finest.
Mind tricks only work on the weak-minded, which his nephew definitely isn't, but Maul can make a recommendation that the mind more easily follows once it has become far more quiet. With Varian's mind now in a compliant state, he imposes a gentle suggestion, not just the word but everything the mind associates with it ringing through. 'Sleep. Sleep.' With his mind relaxed and calm, it's more ready to accept the idea of going to sleep from an outside source. When he feels Varian's breathing even out, he knows he's succeeded.
He slowly removes himself from Varian's mind, making sure his presence doesn't disturb the slowed thoughts and riles them back up again. When he opens up his eyes, he's not surprised to find Varian asleep on his shoulder. He gently lies the boy down on the bed, removes his prosthetic leg, and covers him with his blankets and sheets. He should be able to sleep straight through the night now. Maul leaves the room on silent feet, his work done. He feels very satisfied with the results.]
