[Varian definitely feels like he deserves what this town has done to him. Sometimes, it feels like the punishment he never really got back home. One day, Peter will be trusted enough with the whole sorry tale, and he can learn about the guilt that nips at Varian's heels, too. Truly, the greatest thing to bond over.

It's heartbreaking to hear that Peter can't... just be Peter. This is something Varian's used to, at least. The Grass Demon is an intrinsic part of Fern, as uncomfortable as he makes him feel. It still sucks, though, it's like Peter's had his life stolen from him- maybe not all of it, but enough. ]
