I think it's some sort of power he holds himself. I don't think he can control it very well, ergo the whole EYES thing.
Maybe that's our best choice? I don't know if we should tell Fern beforehand or not. I feel like he SHOULD know about what's inside his own head, but would that clue in the whatever it is and make it lash out? Make it hurt Fern even more than it already is. I don't know what the best course of action is.
