About

They say there's a thin line between genius and insanity. Varian not only straddles that line, but he's set up a permanent base on it. Science, especially alchemy, is his lifeblood, and he's at his happiest when he's creating inventions or mixing new alchemical concoctions. It has made him something of the village weirdo, and before Rapunzel showed up on the scene, he clearly didn't have any friends. Though Varian likes people plenty, he tends to gloss over that maybe not everyone is as interested in science as he is. He tends to yammer on about whatever he's working on to his friends like an excited puppy, not picking up that they're not really all that interested in what he's talking about. Even when they outright tell him so. It makes him on the socially awkward side at best and dismissive of people's interests at worst. He's very eager to share what he knows and show people what he can do- there's a deeply ingrained need to please people there.

It's this desire to please others that cultivates one of Varian's most glaring flaws. Varian desperately seeks validation from his loved ones- particularly his father, Quirin. He wants nothing more than for his father to be proud of him - a motivation that pushes him through the first season while also being one of the root causes for his descent into villainy. Quirin is their village leader- a tough, hardworking man with a dark past of his own- miles apart from his science-minded, curious son. There's definitely a gap between them, personality-wise, and Varian does his best to bridge it, wanting his father to see what he does and be impressed by it. The thing Varian wants most in the world is to be praised for his efforts, to be told he's doing good and helpful things- that he can make a difference in the only way he knows how. He creates an entirely new element to impress Cassandra, whom he carries a torch for, admitting that "if I could show you what I was capable of, you would see something in me, something special." He's treated as something of an oddity- with a mind beyond his time, so he tends to be ostracised, marked as 'a wizard' and 'dangerous' by the citizens of Old Corona. He's misunderstood by everyone who speaks to him, and this only makes him more determined to show what he can do and earn their praise and acceptance.

The kid has a streak of righteousness in him. Varian cares, an awful lot, sometimes a little too much. He wants to make the world a better place with scientific progress- and later wants to use his knowledge to help people fight forces that might otherwise destroy them. He feels that he sees things others either don't see or choose to ignore. When the Black Rocks started taking over Old Corona, his was the loudest voice shouting to do something about them. He could see the threat they were to the village (and likely the world at large) and studied them to try and find out how to remove the threat. When his father not only refused to do anything about them but then later lied to the King about the fact they were a problem at all, Varian lashed out- arguing that their home was being destroyed and he seemed to be the only person who cared about it. Quirin, knowing the true nature of the rocks and trying to protect his son, forbade Varian from experimenting on them. This was something Varian utterly disregarded- believing his father was burying his head in the sand instead of trying to save their village. Later, Varian was the one Rapunzel entrusted with the Demanitus Scroll, knowing that he has the drive and passion to decipher what it means and would not rest until he understood how to use it to protect Corona. Once Varian has set his mind on something, very little will deter him. He's a stubborn little dude.

Unfortunately, this righteousness and his desire for validation mean Varian often fails to understand the consequences of his actions before it's too late. He has tunnel vision when it comes to his experiments and creations. He sees what his end goal is and is willing to reach that no matter what. To him, the end always justifies the means, even when those aforementioned means dip into morally grey areas. This results in his inventions often backfiring on him or causing severe harm to those around him- simply because he failed to think through what might happen if he achieved what he was aiming for. He almost blows Old Corona sky high trying to create a hot water system for them (to make the villagers happy and his father impressed!!!) and his focus when things go wrong was that he "couldn't let it happen again" - trying to fix his mistake- rather than admitting he probably shouldn't have done it in the first place. He does, at least, try to resolve the problems he inadvertently causes. That said, most of those problems could have been averted if he'd thought about if he should do something before thinking if he could.

Varian is a sassy little so-and-so, he has a sarcastic streak a mile wide and has no problem with unleashing it on people. Eager to please as he might be, he doesn't suffer fools gladly. He doesn't have a lot of patience - especially with people who might not be on his own wavelength. Lance especially tends to be the subject of his ire- delightful himbo that he is. This isn't ideal when he's usually the smartest person in the room. Ironically, for an alchemist, he has a short fuse. If he's been irritated or had any of his buttons pressed, he has explosive (hah) angry outbursts. While usually a relatively harmless trait- he cools off relatively quickly- this anger can (and did) turn into something much darker if it's allowed to fester in him.

And eventually, that dark streak was allowed to fester. Rapunzel being unable to come to help him when he needed her most left a deep sense of betrayal in him. The loss of literally everyone he could rely on hit him hard and turned him against the very people he respected and cared about so much. Here, he showed his ability to be deceptive and cruel- pulling Rapunzel along with lies to get her to commit treason for him, and then letting loose with how much she let him down and how he only used her when she finally called him out on it.

This only got worse after he turned completely on Rapunzel. He thought nothing about kidnapping the Queen- then using amber against her to force Rapunzel to help him. All that mattered was saving his father and then making Corona pay for failing them. When that failed, Varian finally snapped. All his anger and hurt exploded out of him, and he lashed out at his former friends. He only cared for revenge, and tried to kill both the Queen and Cassandra in front of the princess- he wanted Rapunzel to "endure the same amount of pain and agony I have". It was no longer about the greater good, or saving his father- it was about making his former friend suffer. That anger and hurt still boiled inside him as he was defeated and taken away. Varian had crossed a line and found himself capable of things he never realised he was capable of before.

This was something that was used to the group's advantage once Varian rejoined the fold. Eugene entrusted him with finding a way to stop Cassandra permnenantly. Both knew this was an absolute last resort, but Varian is also one of the few people within the group who can cross that moral line and do what needs to be done if all other options fail. In the lead up to the final battle, installed a stun mechanism in Quirin's helmet- once Eugene pointed out he was likely a sleeper agent under Cassandra's mind control. It visibly broke Varian's heart to harm his father again- but he did what was needed for the greater good.

Varian carries a lot of guilt over his past actions. His year in jail gave him the space he needed to actually think about what he did, and where he let his anger and hurt take him. After aligning himself with the Saporians, he decided the only way out of the dark place he'd got himself was to erase what he'd done completely. He desperately wanted to redeem himself for what he did- but he felt no one would give him a second chance, and wiping everyone's memories was the only guarantee he could have for a second chance. He was willing to die in a suicide mission to stop the Saporian plot from destroying Corona- begging Rapunzel to let him "clean up his mess". Even after he earned his redemption and became part of Rapunzel's inner circle again, he is haunted by his shame and guilt. This came to a head when they needed to deal with the Red Rocks- Varian admitting to Rapunzel that what he saw in them weren't visions of his worst fears (as they were for everyone else), but reminders of what actually happened- of what he did. He came clean about how he felt no one would ever really forgive him and how he felt that most of the kingdom hated him- adding that he didn't blame them for this at all- that he did terrible things and he deserved their ire. He tackled these fears, but they have not left him entirely. When he tried to reach out to Cass- to convince her that the path of revenge would not end well for her, he opened up plenty about just how much his villainous period still bothers him. He told her it would leave her with a "permanent mark" and in carrying on this way she would "lose her faith and lose her soul". His desperate plea to her made it clear he's still very much haunted by his past and he's not as content in himself as he's been making out to the others.

Despite his past still haunting him, he still settled into his own Disney Certified Happily Ever After after the defeat of Zhan Tiri. He moved into the palace as Corona's Royal Engineer. He finally perfected his hot water boilers and Corona because the first Kingdom to have hot running water. He made a little more peace with himself and his place in the world (despite his mistakes) and was finally relatively happy. He still had plenty of healing to go- but he was on the path towards it at least.

first impressions Varian is noticeably very short. While his legs and arms are in that gangly mid-teen stage, there's no height to him at all. His body language is confident only when he's talking about science, otherwise, he tends to shift around a lot- hugging his arms around his body or rubbing the back of his neck. He doesn't like making eye contact and he shies away from being touched. He speaks with a stammer and often has long pauses between words. Outfit collection.

features The blue streak in his hair is natural, no, this is never explained. He has an absolute shit-ton of freckles and prominent buck teeth. He pretty much constantly wears his thick alchemy gloves and always has his goggles on top of his head (except for when he's sleeping or if he actually decides to use them for their intended purpose). His style tends towards a weird steampunk-goth mashup. Learning Hot Topic existed was the best thing in his life. He has a werewolf form during a full moon or when he's in the Spirit Realm. He wears a engagement ring that he made himself.

Powers

Alchemy

Varian has a genius-level intellect and can create mechanical objects beyond his time period, can create a wide range of non-magical potions, and can study and replicate potions and machinery he comes across. His general... enthusiasm and lack of caring for the consequences of his actions mean quite a few of his experiments backfire all on their own. Nothing he creates is magical technically, by his admission, it's all science-based which sure ACTS like magic. Basically, he's a living deus-ex-machina. In Kaisou, he is limited by what supplies he can gather, and can only create one potion a day.

Encourage better plant growth, making plants grow to full bloom in the matter of days. Trees will take a few weeks.

Earth Manipulation - High (Earth element)

You can telepathically move around large rocks and till small garden size plots of land, controlling the shape of the soil.

Seismic Sense - Low (Earth element)

When you have skin contact with the earth, you can sense vibrations within ten feet of you. Must be Earth Element to purchase. If conditions are met and your opponent is also touching the ground, you get a +1 to dodging attacks.

Elemental Forcefield - Master (Earth & Shadow Element)

Multi-person forcefield that can last for 5 minutes, or a smaller force field that can last for 10 minutes. The forcefield will be stronger against elements they are strong to, but weaker to elements they're vulnerable to. Single-Person Shield: The forcefield will last for five tags, regardless of how many attacks are thrown at it. If it's up against an element it's weak against, an attacking roll that is above 15 will break it. Nat 20 will also break it UNLESS it's an element it's strong against. Multi-Person Shield: The forcefield will last for three tags, regardless of how many attacks are thrown at it. If it's up against an element it's weak against, an attacking roll that is above 15 will break it. Nat 20 will also break it UNLESS it's an element it's strong against. Shield is large enough for 4 people.

Plant manipulation - Medium (Earth element)

Can control the movement of small plants such as flowers and plant parts such as leaves telepathically.

Earth Boost - Medium (Earth element)

You gain a medium power boost your feet are connected directly to the earth. Go barefoot for best results. The further you are from the earth, the more your power diminishes. If you are touching the ground, you gain +2 to all abilities. If you are not touching the ground, you get -2 to all abilities. If you go barefoot, you get an additional +1.

Create Gemstones - Medium (Earth element)

Can make marble-sized gemstones out of clumps of earth in your hand. What kind of gem depends on the material used.

Gem Manipulation - Medium (Earth element)

Medium telekinetic control over gemstones. You can move around multiple small gemstones or medium sized gemstones, as well as change the shape or luster of the gemstone.

Magnetic sense (Earth element)

You can always sense where the magnetic poles are.

Soil analysis (Earth element)

Inherently know the mineral composition of any rock or soil you touch.

Sturdy - Low (Earth element)

Harder to knock over, regardless of weight. If you fail a defense roll on an attack that could result in knockback, your character will not be knocked back unless you rolled 5 or lower.

Hide - Low (Shadow Element)

Can go unnoticed by anyone not actively looking for you (30 seconds).

Rewind Time - Low (Shadow Element)

You can rewind time on small handheld objects to retrace its steps within the last 30 seconds, such as undoing a spilled glass. You can rewind time on any small objects that's been moved within the last tag round. Does not work on people.

Light Dimmer - Medium (Shadow Element)

Turn off any lights within the same room as you.

Sleepy Time - Medium (Shadow Element)

You never have a bad night of sleep unless plot says otherwise.

Conjure Shadow - Medium (Shadow Element)

Can make shadows the size of people. If an area is dark enough, these shadows can manifest into a corporeal form temporarily.

Shadow Manipulation - High (Shadow Element)

You can give the shadows physical form, allowing them to attack a single or help a single person. You can manipulate the shadow's form to be any helpful shape, so long as it's an object a person could reasonably carry (such as a weapon, a chair, etc)

Shadow Claws - Low (Shadow Element)

Can make small claws of shadow or a small blade made of compressed darkness to attack.

Shadow Jump - Medium (Shadow Element)

You can do a shadow jump to any location you've been previously before. Will not work if there is no shadow.

Invisibility - Low (Shadow Element)

Can become invisible (5 minutes).

Night Boost - Low (Shadow Element)

Gain a minor power boost at night time. By contrast, your power slightly diminishes during the day. During the night, you get +1 to all abilities. During the day, you get a -1 to all abilities.

Elemental flaws (Earth & Shadow)

Fear of heights- medium (earth ) Flying or being really high up might induce a panic attack.

Energy Build-Up low (both) The excess of elemental energy in you causes you become twitchy, requiring you to use your elemental abilities at least once every three days in order to burn it off.

Time Blindness (shadow) You have trouble identifying how long something will take. Unless you set alarms or have someone helping you, you're guarenteed to be late to something at least once a week.

Increased Libido- medium (both): The excess of elemental energy causes you to become more easily horny, and during months where your element is dominant you may experience something akin to heat cycles.

Living battery (Gacha regain)

By holding an item, you can charge any battery.

Magic Hair (Gacha regain)

Varian's hair will now glow when he sings and will heal injuries that are touching the hair. Yes he's big mad about it.

Summonable Pen (Gacha regain)

A good quality pen will always appear in Varian's hand when he needs to write something down.

Item Summon - (Master)

You can infuse three medium item AND one large item at the same time with your magic, making them so it will always appear in your hand when you summon them. At this level, while the medium items can be held in your arms, the large item can be big enough for an average person to ride on.

Fire Immunity

You are now immune to normal fire (does not apply to certain magical fires).

Elemental Imbuement

Extreme: Imbue a weapon or item with your element permanently. This will be for Earth & Shadow!

Magical Item Crafting

Allows you to create permanently magical items that are not elemental based in their power.

Werewolf/Barghest (Monster change)

While in a spirit realm or during a full moon, Varian will turn into a werewolf. The further he gets into a transformation, the closer he is tied to the spirit realm. His current changes are:

Wolf tail - this replaces his monkey tail during his monster periods

Full body fur - this has teal highlights on his ruff and tail like his hair stripe.

Aversion to silver (Medium) - Touching silver will cause you to break out into hives. Prolonged contact will cause burns.

Animal communication (Fully converse) - Can fully understand animals compatible with your monster type. and converse at length with them.

Increased appetite after a change - Changing between forms burns off more energy, making him more hungry and in need of food after a change.

Pack instinct (low) - Loneliness affects you more strongly than other people, making you compelled to be around people more often.

Pack mentality (medium) - Being around pack members will not only reduce anxiety, but also cause to heal at faster than normal rates.

Infectious bite -Your bite while you're in wolf form can cause other people to become canine-monsters as well. Requires player permission and does not work on some NPCs.

Lie detection - Can sense if someone is lying. Must be in person in order for it to work.

Pair bond (Jun) Telepathy (High) - Can hold entire conversations with your pair bond or send them sounds as long as you can concentrate on sending them the sound. Note you can only SEND messages, you cannot read the minds of others. The receiving person requires telepathy to send messages back.

Pair bond (Jun) Empath (Low) - When you are with your pair bond, you have an innate sense to their emotional state and/or well being.

Sense evil (high) - Sense if someone has evil within their heart that's more than an average person within 30 feet

Puca (Raccoon) (Monster change)

You are now cursed to shift into a mythical creature! You can choose what mythical creature you want, but it must be mod approved. The curse can be controlled, but gets worse with strong emotion.

Full transformation

Danger Sense - You can sense when you are in near immediate danger. Think Spider Sense.

Fully Converse - Can fully understand animals compatible with your monster type. and converse at length with them.

Speech Mimicry - You can now change your voice to sound exactly like other people.

Misfortune bringer: Medium - People within your immediate vicinity will gain extra misfortune, giving them each a -2 to quest rolls.

Promise Keeper (Medium) - Breaking promises can make you physically ill for a day to a week (depending on the size of the promise) OR until you fix what was broken (if possible).

Trash Panda - You have an innate sense for which dumpsters contain something valuable in it. What is considered valuable... well that's up to you.

Immortality peach side-effects

After breathing in the vapours from the exploded immortality peach, Varian has the following changes:

He ages 4x times slower than normal- he will live to 300-400 unless something kills him.

He is tied to the Spirit Vein- it gets increasingly uncomfortable to be too far out away from it. He can only go 10 miles from the Spirit Vein before being unable to travel further. He's more comfortable in or around the Spirit Realm.

He no longer feels tied to his homeworld. His memories are fine, but the feeling of home is gone.

ARCUS II

MOEBIUS

Increases of potency of any healing item by 1.5x

Fortuna: Increases the spell power and magical defense of 4 people a medium amount. Medium energy drain. Any magic cast or defense rolls against magical attacks will receive a +1 in their rolls.

Golden Spheres: Conjure golden glowing orbs that you can attack people with. Small energy drain

You can make healing items last long enough to be usable for multiple people.

Breath: Uses wind to heal up to four people of mild injuries. Moderate energy drain, Wind element

Dark Matter: Causes a suction effect that draws enemies closer together. sizable energy drain

Seraphic Ring: Heals up to 4 people completely and revives anyone who was near death or unconscious. MASSIVE energy drain
Regular quartz

Moon Lens (Mirage): - When you look at someone, you can immediately see their strengths/weaknesses. Requires player permission for player characters. You can sense when a treasure chest or something you consider of equal importance is near.

Dendro Vision

Elemental Sensing: When standing still, you can sense traces of magical elemental energy within your immediate vicinity. The traces will glow in the colours that match the element. Beings made of magic will glow entirely in their element.

Conjure and manipulate your element: You are able to manipulate small amounts of the element depicted in the Vision (earth), but this takes practice to master. The amount they can conjure without any additional points is equivalent to a 2-point conjuration ability (aka about a bucket's worth of your element), and the manipulation levels will be equivalent to a 3-point manipulation skill.

Elemental burst: The stronger of the two signature attacks, which you can use about once every 1-5 minutes depending on your character's energy levels. This attack will deal elemental-based damage, can do two additional abilities, and if you do a majestic or unique pose while casting it, you will be immune from any attacks while you do that pose (lasts 3 seconds total) this includes:
- Bloom: Should you mix dendro energy with water, it will create a small seed-shaped bomb. These bombs will either make a small explosion if left alone, or a big explosion if set off by fire.
- Decoy: Create a decoy that'll draw enemies's attention and attack that instead for a couple minutes, Lasts until the thing breaks. Does not work so well on intelligent creatures.

Dendro Constructs: You can make temporary constructs made of dendro energy to help you visualize ideas.

Crafting Boon: When you make something, you have a 50% chance not to use all the items you thought you needed, leaving you a bit left.

Crafting duplication: When you make something, you have a 10% chance for it to double, leaving you with two items that you crafted.

Backpack - Always contains at least a few notebooks, charcoal pencils and potion vials.
