Corruption and Beasthood

CORRUPTION STAGES
STAGE 1 (BASELINE)
INSOMNIA ⋙ Varian struggles with sleep. This is pretty much normal for him so almost impossible to distinguish corruption insomnia from his regular insomnia.

PTSD NIGHT TERRORS ⋙ Vivid nightmares - usually his canonical PTSD nightmares involving Quirin being enveloped in ember, but can reliving Deer trauma also. If he manages to get to sleep, there's a chance these nightmares will wake him up.

POOR SELF-CARE/HYPERFIXATION ⋙ Varian often forgets to do things like eating or taking a break from work- he often locks himself up in his lab for hours or even days at a time without someone to actually drop in to remind him to do things he needs to do in order to keep existing.

IMPULSIVE DECISION MAKING ⋙ Varian's already pretty poor impulse control will be drastically worsened as corruption sets in. In early stages this can be as simple as him deciding to just make an explosive when he shouldn't- but as this worsens so will his self-preservation and his desire to preserve others. He'll make progressively more dangerous machines/potions- or risk life and limb trying to get a certain ingredient.

STAGE 2
PREVOUS STAGES ⋙ All previous stages apply, with symptoms worsened.

FATIGUE ⋙ As a coldblood, Varian needs more sleep so the effects messing on his sleep schedule make him very fatigued. As per his power set, if he doesn't sleep within 6 hours of using up his powers, he will collapse into sleep anyway. Unfortunately, once he's in stage 2 corruption, passing out/sleeping will not relieve his exhaustion.

EMOTIONAL INSTABILITY ⋙ Varian's emotions swing wildly with little to no provocation. He can be joking around one second and snapping at someone the next. Corruption or just being a teenager. Who knows.

HALLUCINATIONS ⋙ Varian will start to hallucinate people being enveloped in amber. In early stages of stage 2 corruption, these hallucinations will be brief - vanishing as quickly as they appear. The longer he remains untreated, however, the longer these hallucinations stay.

ASHEN SKIN ⋙ Varian's skin takes an ashy quality, and it becomes very itchy. Scratching it flakes off healthy skin, explosing a burned quality to the skin underneath.

STAGE 3
PREVOUS STAGES ⋙ All previous stages apply, with symptoms worsened.

RED ROCKS ⋙ Varian's hallucinations worsen. He starts to see sharp red rocks everywhere- convinced that these are the cause of his hallucinations. Others may hear him muttering about the "red rocks" a lot and talking about how he needs to find a deep cavern to sever the rock's power. He might even head off to the caves near the Farther Shores in search of it.

ROCK SKIN ⋙ The blackened skin hardens, almost like cooled magma. It becomes craggy and rough to the touch, it's extremely hard to break. It has flecks of amber in it.

TOOTH AND CLAW ⋙ Varian's human teeth are pushed out for sharp, rock-like fangs. The fingers on his hands sharpen into large claws, while the toes on his remaining do likewise, both made of the same rocky substance as his skin.

FIRE POWER CONTROL ⋙ Varian's already tenuous grip on his fire abilities worsen. He has bursts of uncontrollable fire coming out of his hands and mouth.

STAGE 4
PREVOUS STAGES ⋙ All previous stages apply, with symptoms worsened.

DISSOCIATION ⋙ Fulled by his hallucinations of the red rocks, Varian starts to think he's back in Corona. He'll talk about looking for people from home, and will often call Trench CR by names of people he knows back home- genuinely mistaking them for those people instead of thesmelves. His memories of Deerington and Trench become fuzzy as he struggles to remember where he actually is.

HORNS AND SPURS ⋙ Varian starts to grow two horns on either side of his head, as well as on his elbows and the back of his leg, like spurs. These are made of amber and have a gnarled root-spike quality to them.

TAIL ⋙ Varian grows a tail, made of the same crabby rock as the rest of his body, tipped with the spiked amber.

OLD RED EYES IS BACK ⋙ Varian's eyes become red, filling pupil, irises and whites. They are like looking into a furnace, having a flickering flame quality to them.

BEASTHOOD


HE LIKES TO BE TALL ⋙ Varian's beast form is big and chunky- easily ten feet tall. The one bonus to this is that he will struggle to manoeuvre in tighter spaces, especially as he's still missing that leg. Hunters will be able to trap him if they're able to corner him like this.

INPENETRABLE HIDE ⋙ Most of his hide is very difficult to break into to harm him- it's solid and thick. The amber parts of his body are completely unbreakable - unless you happen to know one (1) Disney princess who can sing her horrifying murder incantation, nothing will damage those.

FIRE VENTS ⋙ Varian has vents at his sides, this allows air to flow more into him and spew out fire from his mouth and claws. These are the only real weak spots he has in his hide- it's also incredibly hot. Anyone not immune to fire damage would likely not survive attacking him here- as it would be like trying to jam a sword into a volcano. Blocking these vents will also kill him, as it will stop oxygen from getting to his inner fire and he will simply go out.

VIOLENCE ⋙ All the rage Varian once carried in him didn't go anywhere when he reformed. He just learned to push it down as best he could and make better choices- to not let that part of himself take over again. This self-control is removed in his beast form. He will rage against anyone who comes near, friend or foe alike. He's exceptionally difficult to talk down- killing him is absolutely the easiest way of saving him from beasthood.
