So, it makes sense to have your act of penance be of the more symbolic nature. By performing a task that you find unpleasant and you'd never do by your own accord, you're serving out the punishment you think you deserve.
Then once you've served out that punishment, maybe you'll be more willing to give yourself the grace you definitely deserve.
