[Varian definitely knows he needs to move forward. He was doing that before he was pulled here. The portal was a mistake, he knows that now, and at least it was an unintentional one. But his past is never too far behind him, following him like a spectre. It just got a chance to be louder and more obvious than usual with this rather large error.
